Fired For Winning:
The horror show that was the Eagles 36-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens has to be the absolute rock bottom moment of the Andy Reid era.
Despite Reid's tantrum this week behind closed doors, the Eagles' offensive players showed little spark or stomach for the game. And as is becoming too familiar to Eagles fans, the gameplan lacked focus, continuity, and guts. Linemen were getting beat, Donovan McNabb looked uninterested, and the receivers just couldn't get open. Oh yeah, there was no thought of running the ball in short yardage situations. This is now Reid's brand of football.
Like in most games, the smallish defense did all it could today. They played hard. They played to win. But 5 turnovers and a blocked punt will sap the life out of just about any defensive unit.
Of course the coup de grace of the afternoon was the benching of McNabb to start the 2nd half. McNabb was awful, yes, but the game was still winnable at that point. But did Reid know by halftime that his gameplan for the day was just not going to work (of course he's incapable of adjusting) and he needed a scapegoat? Looks like it to me. Reid didn't even have the balls to tell the man who has single-handedly made the coach's career that he getting the hook. The gutless (emotionally at least) wonder had QB coach Pat Shurmur do his dirty work. What a leader of men.
Now Reid is seemingly at the point of no return with McNabb. He used him as a scapegoat today for his own lack of preparation, years of poor player personnel decisions, and terrible gameday acumen. Can he really go back to him now? Does it matter at this point? The playoffs are out of the question, and this team, at least offensively, has checked out. Kevin Kolb has 5 games to get beat up by the likes of Dallas, New York, and Washington. Hopefully, these will be the only 5 starts of Kolb's career that he'll have to endure the squinting, clueless gaze of Coach Reid on the sideline. He deserves better.
