One of the biggest stories likely to come out of training camp for the Eagles this year will be who winds up as the team’s backup quarterback. There are a number of options, but the field is purported to be wide open. The Eagles drafted Nick Foles in March, but it seems unlikely that he’ll be ready to step up in the event that Michael Vick goes down. The Eagles also signed Trent Edwards, the former Buffalo Bill, but early returns seem to indicate that he won’t be the man either. In fact, at this point all signs point to Mike Kafka getting the nod at backup QB. Kafka played relatively well in OTAs, but the knock on him is his inability to throw the long ball. With weapons like DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, it will be essential for the Eagles to be able to spread defenses to win games. You do that with the threat of the long ball. If you have a QB that can’t make the long throws accurately, it certainly helps opposing defenses nail you down. Not sure how comfortable I am knowing that Michael Vick has played one full season in his career, and what awaits the Eagles if he does get hurt.

Eagles Tight End Brent Celek has a slight sprain of his MCL. He sustained the injury in practice on Thursday. Celek had a solid year last year despite the fact that he said he was never healthy. Celek entered camp healthy and hoping to have a breakout year, and this shouldn’t do much to set him back. He will be day-to-day while recovering. The Eagles don’t appear in too much of a hurry to sign a veteran TE, despite the rumors that they were interested in former Giants and Saints TE Jeremy Shockey.

There was another injury to report out of camp on the first day of hitting.  While contact may not have played a role in the injury, Wide Receiver Riley Cooper will be sidelined for several weeks with a broken collar bone.  The exact timeframe for Cooper’s recovery is not yet known, but Eagles’ GM Howie Roseman said that he didn’t see the team making any moves to pick up another receiver just yet.  Ironically, Riley Cooper is the Eagles’ biggest receiving target, and while he hasn’t had a huge impact in his first two years, the hope was that Cooper could act as a big red zone target and pull down some passes.  Without him, the team may continue to struggle inside the 20.  A name that has been linked to the Eagles before and who has lobbied for a job with the Birds is Plaxico Burress.  Burress is still unsigned, and it may behoove the Eagles to look into bringing him into camp.

The Eagles brought in Pro Bowl punter Mat McBriar, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys to compete with Chas Henry for the starting spot. McBriar injured his plant foot and was ineffective last year, but his average of 45.3 yard per punt rank him 4th in NFL history. McBriar played for 8 season with Dallas, but signed with the Eagles on Wednesday. If McBriar is effective, it may signal the end for second year punter Chas Henry.

Michael Vick was instructed to slide more by President Barrack Obama. It seems Obama took an opportunity with Nnamdi Asomugha to send Vick a message. Fans and coaches have been trying to get Vick to slide more for years, but maybe the Leader of the Free World will have a better shot at getting the message across. The health of Michael Vick is clearly one of the biggest areas of concern for the Eagles and their bid for a Super Bowl championship.
