Eagles officially sign highly-touted UDFA Shon Stephens
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles officially signed former Ferris State cornerback Shon Stephens to their 90-man roster on Monday.

The move comes just a week after Stephens participated in the Eagles' rookie minicamp.

Stephens comes with an interesting background since he did not play college football from 2019 to 2021. Instead, he took that time off to care for his sick mom. He was also denied twice by the NCAA when he attempted to transfer to Penn State and Purdue.

In the two seasons of college football that he did play at Division II-level schools Ferris State and West Liberty, he made the best of them and posted 16 total interceptions and was named All-American in 2022.

He caught the attention of many national scouts during the pre-NFL Draft process following an impressive performance at Michigan State's Pro Day where he ran a 4.38 40-yard dash and clocked a 6.99 3-cone drill.

Stephens is also the nephew of 13-year NFL veteran Joey Porter Sr. and the cousin of Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

Eagles' 14 Cornerbacks Competing for a Roster Spot

The Eagles' cornerback competition will be one to keep an eye on throughout the offseason.

With Stephens now in the mix, the Eagles have a total of 14 cornerbacks competing for a roster spot, including 2024 first and second-round picks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

Here are the Eagles 14 CBs:

  • Darius Slay
  • James Bradberry
  • Avonte Maddox
  • Mekhi Garner
  • Mario Goodrich
  • Quinyon Mitchell
  • Cooper DeJean
  • Isaiah Rodgers
  • Tyler Hall
  • Kelee Ringo
  • Eli Ricks
  • Josh Jobe
  • Zech McPhearson
  • Shon Stephens

Cornerback was arguably the Eagles' weakest position last year, but it may be their strongest position now -- at least on paper.

Of those on the 90-man roster, it's likely Darius Slay, Quinyon Michell, Avonte Maddox, Kelee Ringo, Cooper DeJean and Josh Jobe are the six that make the final 53-man roster. However, the others will still have a fair chance.

In addition to signing Stephens, the Eagles also moved on from tight end Noah Togiai.
