Eagles rookie tight end Zach Ertz hauled in his fourth touchdown catch of the season against the Vikings and surpassed veteran  Brent Celek in playing time. (Image courtesy of Minnesota.com) Eagles rookie tight end Zach Ertz saw his most expanded workload of the season Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings and surpassed veteran Brent Celek in terms of snap count.  The Stanford University product, and Eagles second-round draft choice, has come on strong of late and took 65 percent of the offensive snaps to Celek's 45.  Ertz made the most of his increased playing time by hauling in six receptions on nine targets from quarterback Nick Foles for 57 yards and a touchdown. On Tuesday Eagles offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur downplayed the rookie surpassing Celek and said that it was just the way that the game plan worked out against the Vikings. Chip Kelly's comments Monday mirrored Shurmur's but it appears the first-year head coach hopes to see more of Ertz moving forward in the passing game.  "I think some of the things we're doing and with that and there are certain things where when you get into a throwing game," Kelly said. "It gets Zach in the game a little more." Still, it's hard to ignore the production that Ertz has put up as a rookie, especially as of late. In the last four games Ertz, 23, has posted 13 receptions for 156 yards and three touchdowns.  On the season, Ertz has totalled 32 receptions for 399 yards and four touchdowns, while slowly but surely showing exactly how prolific the tight end position can be -along with Celek- in Kelly's up-tempo offense.  "I think Zach is similar to guys like Celek who came in primarily as a pass catcher," Shurmur said. "Ideally you want to see a guy develop a complete game, which means as a tight end improving as a blocker so you can play more than just third downs. I think he's made progress through the year." Molding Ertz into that type of complete tight end seems to be the next step for the coaching staff, especially if the short-term plan is to use him as the primary tight end moving forward for not just the future but for the remainder of this season as well. "I think that sort of thing takes some time," Shurmur admitted. "He's a rookie that's playing a lot of football in his first year, much like Lane Johnson. Those rookies have a lot to learn and you like to see improvement throughout the year and he's very good at showing us that."  Clearly Kelly, Shurmur and the Eagles see value in Ertz's playmaking ability after making him the third player selected in the second round of the draft. Now it seems those visions are coming to fruition. "You saw it the other night," Shurmur pointed out. "He can make acrobatic catches and if you're a tight end and can't catch the ball then I don't know what use you are. He can do that. "He's always been an outstanding pass receiver. When he makes those [one handed catches] they're terrific. But we expect he'll make a contested catch and he's done a good job of that."   Matt Lombardo is the Editor-In-Chief of Eagledelphia and also an on-air personality on 97.5 FM The Fanatic in Philadelphia. Eagles secondary struggling to stay afloat with boatload of injuries

According to Mike Sielski of Philly.com, the Eagles depth in the defensive secondary is so razor thin, they don't have the luxury of benching a player, no matter how bad they are playing. After Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel lit them up Sunday for 382 yards, two touchdowns, the Eagles dropped to 31st in the NFL in pass defense. Safety Patrick Chung, who has been struggling...

Brandon Boykin Undergoing Concussion Protocol

Eagles cornerback Brandon Boykin suffered a concussion Sunday and is undergoing the league's protocol, according to Bill Davis. (Image via Bleeding Green Nation).  Perhaps more concerning than the Eagles blowout loss to the Vikings on Sunday was the loss of cornerback Brandon Boykin.  Boykin suffered what the team is still officially terming a "head injury" -read...

Eagles poor play keeps NFC East up in air: 'We were just sloppy in all three phases of the game'

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles threw for a career-high 428 yards and three touchdowns, while WR DeSean Jackson had a career-high 10 catches and a season-high 195 receiving yards, and seventh time this season, they scored 30 or more points. However, despite the stat line, they lost by 18. The defense faltered, but it was an overall effort in sloppy play and the Eagles were shocked...

Chip Kelly isn’t leaving the Eagles to take the Texas job

A report came out on Sunday that the University of Texas would like to talk with Eagles head coach Chip Kelly about their head coaching vacancy.  According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network,  Kelly isn’t going anywhere. Strange to hear some mention Chip Kelly as UT candidate. 1. He's not leaving Eagles. 2. 18-month show-cause penalty...

Chip Kelly: “I’m the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles”

getty images Chip Kelly is the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. At-least that is what the head coach told reporters on Monday when he name became linked to the head coaching job at the University of Texas. With Mack Brown to step aside after the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30, Texas has been linked to numerous big name coaches in recent weeks. In addition to Kelly, Texas has a list of potential...

Eagles Secondary In Shambles Before Biggest Test

Patrick Chung and the Eagles defense was burnt to a crisp against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in advance of their biggest test of the season this week against the Chicago Bears.  Bill Davis' defense picked a terrible time to break and consequentially break down.  As if giving up 48 points to Matt Cassel and the Minnesota Vikings weren't tragic enough, Brandon Boykin...

2013 Philadelphia Eagles: Who is this Team and What to Expect Now?

LeSean McCoy with eight carries and less rushing yards than Nick Foles?  Chip Kelly was that scared of Cordarrelle Patterson?  The Eagles defense gave up that many yards and points to who? Anger.  Frustration.  Yelling at my television.  Furiously restraining myself from spewing negativity about this Eagles team on Twitter all throughout the game.  Briefly getting excited during...

Jason Peters puts Eagles' "Monday Over-reaction" into perspective...

Many of we Iggles fans are currently bummed out about the recent loss to the Vikings, a game we should have dominated according to the "experts" and the computer simulations... But the fact remains, we are still in the playoff mix if we can beat the Chicago Bears on Sunday... I found it interesting to compare notes with an actual Eagles player, Jason Peters, the...

Chip Kelly: Starters Will Face Bears no Matter What

Even if the Cowboys beat the Redskins Sunday, don't expect DeSean Jackson and the Eagles starters to get a rest against the Bears Sunday night. (Image courtesy of Philly.com) Chip Kelly is as unconventional as they come. Conventional wisdom says that if you have the opportunity to rest your starters this late in the season in advance of a possible playoff run, you rest said starters...

Adrian Peterson not playing beat the Philadelphia Eagles

So often NFL analysts will talk about trap games, and so often coaches and players will dismiss a game being one because they take every team serious and play one game at a time. T he players toe the company line and the coaches may honestly believe there is no such thing. If any game this season would fall under this “trap game” category it would have been the Philadelphia...

Philadelphia Eagles promote safety Keelan Johnson from practice squad

[Photo: Allan Henry-US PRESSWIRE] If last Sunday’s game versus Minnesota Vikings didn’t show anything good, it showed the bad and that is the Philadelphia Eagles secondary. The secondary got torched by quarterback Matt Cassel and the Vikings wide receivers. Also in that game, two Eagles safeties Kurt Coleman and Colt Anderson got injured and that left them really thin at the...
