Lane Johnson said he was never worried that he might not agree to a contract in time for the start of training camp. Johnson’s premonition came true when the fourth overall pick in the NFL draft agreed to a four-year contract late Saturday night. The deal is worth a reported $19.85 million that included a $12.8 million signing bonus due up front in exchange for “offset language” in the final year of the contract. “I wanted to get it done,” Johnson said. “I told my agent I wanted to close things up before camp. We got it done, so everything is taken care of and it took a load off my shoulders.” The “offset language” means that if the Eagles were to release Johnson in his final year, they would only have to pay the difference between the guaranteed money owed him and the contract he signs with his new team. The Eagles, obviously, don’t plan to release Johnson. They drafted him with the expectation that he will start for several years. Johnson was practicing with the first team at right tackle midway through the spring organized team activities and fully expects to continue playing with the first team from Day 1 of training camp. “That’s what I got drafted for, to play some football,” Johnson said. “I expect to compete at a high level from Day 1. Going into the season, I want to start.”
