Dan Graziano of ESPN.com doesn’t expect to see the Eagles lockup WR Jeremy Maclin to a long-term contract at any point this season.
This was a response to a mailbag question, but Graziano makes a great point in that neither Maclin nor the Eagles have a whole lot of incentive to work out a deal at some point in the near future.
Maclin, 25, is coming off of a rather mediocre 2012 season, so it makes sense for him to play out his final year of his rookie contract “à la Joe Flacco“ and bet on himself in Chip Kelly‘s offensive system.
The risk however is whether he’ll be able to remain healthy throughout the season and produce solid numbers in a brand new offense.
Maclin knows the Eagles have enough cap-space to offer him a long-term deal, so this figures to come down to 2013 performance.
We have Maclin listed as the No. 22 player in our Top 50 – 2014 Free Agents list.
