If the Eagles can’t contain the Giants D line, it will be a long day for Michael Vick on Sunday.

Sunday night’s matchup with the New York Giants will be a huge game for the Philadelphia Eagles. There is huge difference between 3-1 and 2-2 in the NFL, and a loss in this game could really be a setback for the Eagles.

This game will undoubtedly be won in the trenches. And specifically it will come down to whether or not the Eagles patchwork O Line will be able to stop the Giants strong D line.

Michael Vick has issues picking up the blitz, that really can’t be disputed. In addition to that, though, Eagles blockers, including RB LeSean McCoy had issues picking up where they needed to step in and help protect Vick. We know McCoy was certainly not carrying the ball, so he needs to do a better job of picking up extra men being brought on the blitz. And, of course, it would be nice to see McCoy carry the ball some too.

Dallas Reynolds, filling in for the injured Jason Kelce, struggled against the Cardinals, and you can almost guarantee he’ll struggle against the Giants, who have a better D line. Demetress Bell, filling in for King Dunlap who was filling in for the best left guard in football Jason Peters, also struggled in the desert.

If the Eagles can’t contain Jason Pierre-Paul, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck, it will be a very long day for Michael Vick. Vick has certainly struggled with turnovers this season and if his O Line allows the Giants to get pressure, you can expect that trend to continue.

On the flip side of the ball, one of the things I’ve found a little scary so far, is the Eagles lack of ability to get pressure on opposing QBs. The Eagles defensive line was supposed to be a strength for this team, yet hasn’t really lived up to its billing as a sack producing machine. They have 7 sacks so far led by Jason Babin’s 2.5. The O line has given up 9. Like most QBs, if the Eagles get to Eli Manning and pressure him, he is prone to turnovers and mistakes, but the Eagles will have to do a better job than they’ve been doing to make that happen.

In the end, this game will come down to the trenches. The Eagles better be ready or they’ll be 2-2 and the doubts and questions will keep coming.
