On Monday night, Joe Flacco got into some hot water calling the idea of a cold-weather Super Bowl “retarded.” Eli Manning disagrees with both the term Flacco used and the idea behind his statement. The Giants quarterback said he likes the idea of a New York Super Bowl, and thinks that it offers a unique location for the NFL’s biggest event. “I disagree with a lot of things about that comment: wording and overall content of it,” Manning told the media on Friday in New Orleans. “I think it will be really good.” Of course, why wouldn’t Manning like the idea? And even if he didn’t, why would he say so? Manning is used to playing in cold-weather climates after eight years in New York. And how bad would it look if he said he didn’t like the idea of a Super Bowl being played in his home stadium. “Obviously the weather will be kind of the big issue. But I always say, ‘Hey, you can play the NFC or AFC Championship Game in cold weather and have snow coming down, and that’s just part of it,” Manning said. “Why not have a Super Bowl [in those conditions]?’ Originally, championships were decided in cold-weather games, and outside, and in New York. So this is a chance to bring it back out. I think it will be unique and different and something new and good for the game.” Well, it will certainly be unique — especially if it snows. Get ready for complaints from fans and the media now, they’ll be coming in droves a year from now.
