Losing Elvis Dumervil creates a huge hole at defensive end, and while the pursuit of Dwight Freeney hasn’t come to fruition, the Broncos could already have their answer on the roster. Robert Ayers was drafted by the Broncos 18th overall in the 2009 NFL Draft with the full intent on him being dominant pass rusher. However, Ayers didn’t get off to a fast start, in 2011, starting in 13 games, Ayers recorded 39 tackles and 3.0 sacks (all career highs) while showing improvement against the run. Ayers spent time at defensive end in Denver's base 4-3 defense and rotated to defensive tackle in certain nickel defensive sets during the 2011 season. His improvement didn’t carry over to 2012 as he became a back up under new defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, and the emergence of Von Miller. Ayers now gets another shot at redemption with Dumervil’s departure. According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos want to give Ayers a second opportunity to earn the starting nod.
