ESPN Has Steelers' Cameron Sutton As The #1 Most Important Player To Sign For AFC North Rivals
Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest talking points for the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason is the cornerback position. Arguably the biggest weak link to the team, fans expect to see some change with the NFL Draft and free agency. On top of that, Cameron Sutton has yet to sign a contract with the Steelers. Sutton was one of, if not the best cornerback on the Steelers last season and is someone they need to bring back. According to ESPN, he should be staying in the AFC North, but just not with the Steelers.

Steelers fans worrying about Sutton

ESPN has Sutton's potential team as the Baltimore Ravens. The biggest question for the Ravens however is signing Lamar Jackson. Jackson could be expected to become one of, if not the highest-paid player in NFL history. So, for all you Steelers fans worrying about Sutton going to the Ravens, you have to ask, is it even possible? With money being an issue, ESPN has this to say about the current state of the Ravens:

"The Ravens don't have a ton of holes opening up from free agency unless they allow quarterback Lamar Jackson to leave town. They have David Ojabo ready to step in for veteran pass-rushers Justin Houston and Jason Pierre-Paul, and there are plenty of backup guards around to replace Ben Powers. The biggest need might be at cornerback, where Marcus Peters and Kyle Fuller are free agents."

The Ravens have arguably one of the better secondaries in the NFL, but depth is an issue for them. This is why they would like to potentially pursue Sutton. ESPN had this to say about the potential fitting of Sutton in Baltimore:

"Sutton comes from a Pittsburgh team that mixes man and zone coverage much like Baltimore does, and he provides the Ravens with flexibility where they could rotate the slot between Sutton, Marlon Humphrey and safety Kyle Hamilton. Sutton had the best year of his career in 2022, ranking third in the league in coverage success rate, according to Sports Info Solutions charting."

Sutton most definitely had his best season and has been improving year by year. In 2022 he had 43 total tackles and 3 interceptions, with this he solidified himself as the number 1 corner for the Steelers. So instead of being picked up somewhere else, I feel he is someone that must be re-signed in Pittsburgh because after Sutton, the next best option is what, Levi Wallace? That is not a situation I want to be stuck with.

For those of you who are wondering who ESPN has the Steelers taking, it is a player I have seen the idea thrown around quite a bit in T.J. Edwards. Edwards played very well at the linebacker position for the Philadelphia Eagles the last couple of years. He would be a solid addition to the team after what is pretty much inevitable of them losing Devin Bush. ESPN had this to say on the potential signing of Edwards:

"Originally, we planned to suggest 33-year-old Lavonte David for the Steelers, as he's still playing at a high level. However, signing a veteran doesn't really seem like the Steelers' way. They're more likely to sign a younger player still in his prime. So how about the 27-year-old Edwards, who started for Philadelphia for the past three years? Edwards is not a supreme run-stopper, but he's excellent against the pass. He allowed just 3.6 yards per pass in coverage with a 74% success rate last season."

So, what do you think, Steeler Nation? Is Cameron Sutton somebody that is a must-sign for the Steelers? Are there any other cornerbacks you would like to see in Pittsburgh?
