As a Seahawks fan, when my pal Chris Newell texted me with the news, per ESPN, that Percy Harvin might be coming to town, I immediately hopped on the Internet.
When I saw it was true, I jumped out of my office chair.
Harvin has an injury history, which worries me, but giving up just one first-rounder for a proven player who can be explosive and add another dimension to an already solid offense is exactly what the ‘Hawks need to get to the Super Bowl.
This also allows the ‘Hawks to focus more on replacing and gaining depth and defense, and perhaps addressing their backup tight end situation, via the draft. If your biggest concerns lie with some defensive depth on an already amazing defense and a backup TE, you are in good shape.
This also gives Russell Wilson a target out of the slot who can run short routes and turn them into big yardage. Golden Tate did a great job, but if he slides on the depth chart, and he and Doug Baldwin are the third and fourth WR, that’s also a good thing. These two will now have a chance to fly more under the radar with teams concerned about Rice, Harvin, and TE Zach Miller. Tate and Baldwin won’t get as many balls, but they can keep making big impact plays when they get single coverage.
Oh yeah, there’s also a run game that NO ONE wants to face. Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch will run over DBs, and if you play the pass, the ‘Hawks will pound the ball. Harvin adds the element of those WR screen passes and short outs, which means defenses can’t commit to Lynch and the run, lest they get torched over the top or underneath by speedy Seattle wideouts.
Harvin needs to pass a physical, and the trade cannot be complete until Tuesday at 4 p.m. EST, but Seahawks fans should be excited. The trade is also somewhat contingent on Harvin agreeing to an extension, which he should readily agree to, since he’ll be on a true contender. Harvin is only 24 years old and has a lot of mileage left, so the Hawks won’t mind shelling out the money for an extension for the young WR.
It’s a long time until next season, but as a Seattle fan, I’m already salivating at the thought of a Super Bowl. Percy Harvin is a big piece to the puzzle.
