The road to success came different for San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Seattle Seahawks Russell Wilson. For Kaepernick, an injury in the 2012 midseason gave him the opportunity to wrestle the starting job away from Alex Smith. However, Wilson beat out free agent prize Matt Flynn in the preseason and his status was undisputed. With a year under their belts (actually for Kaepernick it’s his 3rd year, but second being a starter) the litmus test truly begins. The NFL is an adaptive league, they not only copy the new trends, and it’s their job to find a way to shut them down. In this case, the honeymoon is over and the marriage begins. While many experts are heralding Kaepernick as a special talent, Wilson’s accuracy makes him just as dangerous, maybe even more. Kaepernick still has to prove he can work from the pocket, something Wilson has shown already for an entire season. Wilson relies less on his legs than Kaepernick and while the read option caught the NFL off guard last year, teams are going to great length’s to have a gameplan in place not to get victimized by the option based offense. According to Mike Sando of ESPN, it’s a tricky choice for anyone to choose one over the other. "It looks like he is doing a really good job reading the defenses right now," Douglas said of Wilson. "On the flip side, with Colin Kaepernick, in that Super Bowl, you saw what he is going to see all year long. Teams are going to hit him. The Baltimore Ravens had a great game plan. They made him hold onto the ball and play quarterback. He had a little bit of problem with that. I'm not saying he's not going to be a good quarterback, but when he couldn't run that read option like he wanted to and he had to actually go through his progression and find the open receiver, he had a little bit of a problem doing that. So, I say right now, Russell Wilson is more in line to take that next step."
