Ex-Bears coach admits Justin Fields was ‘hard to watch’: 'It’s just bad football'
Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Justin Fields’s term with the Chicago Bears was underwhelming, to say the least. The quarterback’s performance with the franchise was not entirely his fault, as he did the best with the pieces that he was surrounded with.

The popular opinion is that the Bears failed Fields as a player and sabotaged his career, which has now resulted in him being a backup QB to Russell Wilson on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It turns out that the harsh truth for fans to accept is that Justin Fields was indeed not a good fit for the Chicago Bears. As per NFL writer Tyler Dunne, one coach in Chicago who saw the QB play was far from impressed with what he saw.

The anonymous coach believed Fields attempted to look all over the place but failed to achieve anything,

Watch his eyes. He tries to see the whole thing and doesn't see anything. His eyes are all over the place and it's just really hard to watch. It's just bad football. the anonymous coach said

Coming into the league, one of Fields’ strengths was his vision of the field. He had this knack for analyzing defenses in detail and quickly before figuring out what play to run. However, when he came into the NFL, Fields began to look more confused as he scouted through the field, but the question is if it truly was his fault.

Justin Fields could have performed better if he had been surrounded by more talent

The issue that the quarterback faced was that he did not have a lot of talent to throw the ball to. As a result, he had to end up relying solely on his athleticism and running the ball on numerous occasions.

Justin Fields showed flashes wherein fans were really excited at the prospect of him being the team’s franchise quarterback, but ultimately, the team’s record did not improve with him, and when you have a shot at drafting talent such as Caleb Williams, it is hard to pass on that opportunity.

Justin Fields is now embarking on the next chapter of his career. His tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers is one that seems optimistic, as there is a slight chance he may get to start over Russell Wilson if the veteran QB fails to cut it for the team. At this point, there is no guarantee that the quarterback will get any playing time, but as in the case of the NFL, you can never tell.

In the 2023–24 season, Justin Fields threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions with a QBR of 46.1. In the last two seasons, Fields led the league in one thing, which is in terms of taking hits from the defense.

The positive aspect of him leaving the Bears is that the quarterback can hope to maintain longevity in the NFL, something he definitely would not have been able to do if he had continued to take hits the way he did as a Bear. The man has a lot of talent, and hopefully he gets into a system that can capitalize off of it.
