Last season, everyone became familiar with Bucs running back Doug Martin. From his Thursday night highlight reel in Minnesota to being selected to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, Martin set the bar pretty high for any future performances. But those who are around the second-year running back on a daily basis feel that he is more than capable of duplicating or even improve on his 2012 campaign. And head coach Greg Schiano believes Martin can get better. Again, I think his second go-round in this system and in the NFL, and if you look at him, I think he looks better now than he did this time last year, physically, understanding wise, all those things. I think there’s another level for him for sure. Schiano is not the only one that thinks Martin can certainly improve on last year. Quarterback Josh Freeman also shared his thoughts on Martin and added that the return of two key offensive linemen can make Martin more dangerous. Doug everyday comes in and gives it his best. When he gets the ball, he runs hard. Also our O-Line, having Carl (Nicks) and Davin (Joseph) back and healthy, that’s going to make a huge difference. Doug Martin rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns during his rookie season in 2012. He obtained those numbers running behind a line that was without Joseph for the entire season and Nicks was lost for the second half of 2012. Even without his Pro Bowl linemen to block in front of him, Martin ran with lots of confidence. Is it possible he’s even more confident than last year? He says he is. “I’m a lot more comfortable,” he said. ” A lot more confident in what I’m doing out there. I’m ready for the season to start.” With the season he had last year, opposing defenses have to wonder what more Martin can do feeling more comfortable and confident than he did just a year ago. Good thing that the Bucs have him on their sidelines.
