The Falcons seemed ready to pack in the season this afternoon.  Playing at home against an Arizona Cardinals team on a five game losing streak seemed like a guaranteed win.  Matt Ryan threw a career high five interceptions (three off tips), with the Falcons turning the ball over a ridiculous six times.     Oh, and we have no run game.   The offensive line was frequently blown up and dominated with Sam Baker playing like the Sam Baker of old.  The defense ran hot and cold against likely the league's worst offensive line, mediocre running backs and carousel of terrible quarterbacks.  Of course our defense has the excuse of starting in their own red zone on three separate turnovers.     I apologize to those of you carnival folk but what an ugly loss.  I pull out five points of interest about the game and our team after the jump.   The Cardinals are bad.  Very bad.  The Falcons did their very best to hand the Cardinals the game but the Ryan Lindley-led Cardinals struggled to capitalize.  If Atlanta played this flat against a semi-competent team that could convert over 12% of their 3rd down situations the Falcons would have lost by 40 points.  In a concerning pattern the Falcons are incapable of moving the ball outside of the hurry up offense in the last two minutes of a half.   A quick five points about this game and our team:   1.  The Falcons are still giving Michael Turner the rock.  Chris Mortensen reported/guessed the Falcons will get Jacquizz and Snelling with Michael Turner struggling to run the ball.  That didn't happen with Turner getting 15 carries and Quizz and Snelling combining for only 6.  Turner managed to bust one of his ~10 yard runs to salvage his terrible stats and managed just over 3 YPC.  HE did manage a nice 1 yard touchdown.  However it was more of the same from Turner, plodding to get to the line of scrimmage, getting easily arm tackled and of course, dropping easy passes.     2.  The Falcons are getting injured.  Sean Weatherspoon was out today and our linebackers have struggled without him.  Stephen Nicholas has made very few impact plays and Akeem Dent does not look ready to start.  Not helping anything was Asante Samuel leaving the game (twice) and Julio Jones not making it through another game.  Atlanta will struggle if a number of our best players have trouble getting on the field.   3.  Roddy White had 123 yards and is struggling.  White had his man beat likely for a touchdown but seemed to have no idea when the ball was supposed to come his way.  Reminds me a bit of the play where he beat his man but failed to pull in a game winning touchdown last week because he could not locate the football.  Oh, and Roddy easily popped up Ryan's first interception.  I am getting a bit worried about Roddy and these bad mental lapses.   4.  The offensive line has been disintegrating.  The Falcons started the year with the offensive line being their weak spot.  Shockingly we looked nearly average for the early part of the year, but times have changed and we are a line full of weak points.  We saw Sam Baker give up some easy pressures and bad blocking by Blalock and Clabo.  The Caridnals defense is somewhat underrated but should not have given us the trouble we got today.   5.  Matt Ryan is turning into a gunslinger.  Alright, maybe gunslinger isn't the right word.  However, Ryan remained confident in this game and battled back from four interceptions to lead the Falcons down the field for Michael Turner's game deciding touchdown.  Many quarterbacks would respond by checking down or calling audibles into more runs but Ryan fought back.  I have said this WAY too many times this year but learning to win ugly is important in the NFL.  It seemed like last year when everything would go wrong the Falcons would have an embarrassing defeat. The Falcons turned the ball over a ridiculous six times but pulled out the win.   The Falcons have plenty to work on, struggling in pass protection, run offense and run defense, but inexplicably remain the NFL's only 9-1 team.  Atlanta will have a busy week preparing for a surging Tampa Bay and a short week to rematch New Orleans.  More than any time this year, the next 1.5 weeks will be the most definitive span of this season.

The Falcons are 8-1 thanks to Matt Ryan. Has he done enough to be the MVP? A look at the MVP candidates.

The Falcons started 8-0 behind Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense.  Is Ryan a legitimate MVP candidate? We've entered the second half of the season and talk of league MVP will start heating up. Here is a look at my MVP candidates by position: Quarterback: Payton Manning - Manning not only switched teams but came back from neck surgery that caused him to miss all of...

Falcons bounce back, edge Cardinals

ATLANTA -- On a miserable day, Matt Ryan came through when it counted for the Atlanta Falcons. Ryan overcame a career-worst five interceptions, guiding Atlanta to its only offensive touchdown in the fourth quarter, and the Falcons rallied from their first loss of the season for a sloppy 23-19 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Falcons (9-1) turned it over a...

Falcons prevail despite Ryan's five picks

ATLANTA -- Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons were bad, but victorious once again. Ryan overcame a career-worst five interceptions to lead another fourth-quarter comeback in the Falcons' 23-19 victory over the reeling Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at the Georgia Dome. Ryan threw for 301 yards on 28-of-46 passing with the five picks. Jonathan Babineaux had a momentum-shifting...

Ryan regroups as Falcons rally past Cards, 23-19

The comparison of starting quarterbacks just didn't seem fair. Arizona's John Skelton was benched after only five incompletions. Atlanta's Matt Ryan kept throwing after five interceptions. Michael Turner scored the winning touchdown on a 1-yard run with 6:40 remaining, and Atlanta bounced back from its first loss of the season to rally past Arizona 23-19 Sunday, giving...

Falcons pull out sloppy victory

On a miserable day, Matt Ryan came through when it counted for the Atlanta Falcons. Arizona Cardinals defense teams up for incredible sideline fumble recovery

Sure the Falcons beat the Cardinals 23-19 despite Matt Ryan’s terrible day (5 INTs, zero touchdowns), but that’s only because Arizona’s quarterback situation may be the worst in the league. It surely isn’t their defense, especially when you see them making incredible plays like this one. Falcons RB Jason Snelling, after a short pass from Ryan, turns upfield but has the ball...

Arizona's offense fails to support D's big day

Coaches struggle with challenge flag

I subscribe to the theory that it's better to be lucky than good. But what if you're both? Say hello to the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons not only survived an uncharacteristic five-interception performance by quarterback Matt Ryan, but also a couple decisions by head coach Mike Smith in replay as Atlanta rallied to defeat Arizona 23-19 Sunday. As replay has become more...

Tom Brady Impresses Against Colts, Matt Ryan Drops Off in NFL MVP Power Rankings

Thanksgiving is just a few days away, which is awesome, especially if you  like copious amounts of family, food, booze and football, and not necessarily in that order. The Turkey Day week is huge in those aspects, and it’s also huge in the NFL. Tom Brady and the Patriots, the best team in the second half of just about every season for the last decade or so, know that better than...

Falcons Commit Six Turnovers, Still Pull Out Win

The Falcons and the Cardinals played a tight game today, but one stat should have given the Cardinals the clear and decisive victory.  That stat is six forced turnovers.Falcons' fans knew the game was going to be a tough one when the Cardinals were able to intercept Matt Ryan's first pass on the first play of the game.  The Cardinals were able to turn that interception...

Atlanta Falcons Overcome 5 Interceptions, Beat Hapless Cardinals

This game between the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals proved to be one of the premier games of Week 11 as I predicted earlier this week.  The passing attack of both teams was lack luster and on the offensive side of the ball only a handful of players had good games.  For the winning team the Falcons, they experienced sloppy play from quarterback Matt Ryan all afternoon as...

Arizona QB situation in disarray after loss

The quarterback situation for the Arizona Cardinals is in disarray again following the benching of John Skelton early in the team's 23-19 loss at Atlanta. Rookie Ryan Lindley replaced Skelton and had a difficult day as Arizona managed to lose despite six turnovers by the Falcons, five of them on Matt Ryan interceptions. Asked if he would stick with Lindley, coach Ken Whisenhunt...

Ryan, Foster fall short in Week 11

Studs QB: Matt Schaub, Texans It's common for owners to direct their displeasure at a player for a disappointing display, but Schaub might be the first performer to throw for over 500 yards and still be the target of vexation. This petulance derives from the fact that Schaub, who racked up five end-zone excursions on the afternoon, was started in only 32 percent of FOXSports...

Sunday Wrap Up

Bills def. Dolphins: This loss almost guarantees a losing season for the Dolphins, who have a daunting schedule ahead of them. Reggie Bush and the running game has dried up, which has left the inexperienced Ryan Tannehil completely vulnerable with no weapons to work with. A once playoff hopeful will probably end up with 5 or 6 wins on the season. The Bills, on the other hand...
