The Falcons have made their first move in free agency, reaching a deal with linebacker Stephen Nicholas on a five-year contract.
It’s a five-year deal worth $17.5 million, according to Zach Klein of Atlanta’s WSB television station. Nicholas was not the most well known player from South Florida when the birds grabbed him in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.
He has worked hard and has provided help off the bench in his first two NFL seasons, and has become a productive starter in the last two years, recording 129 tackles in 2009 and 2010 while starting 24 games at linebacker.
There was talk that Nicholas would end up with the Giants. One of the best coverage linebackers available heads back to Atlanta where he’ll likely start on the strong side.
