FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga.-- When the Atlanta Falcons take the field a week from Sunday in search of their first playoff victory in head coach Mike Smiths five seasons, at least one player will be competing with a heavy heart. Smith announced on Friday that four-time Pro-Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion Asante Samuel was not at practice all week because his mother Christine had passed away earlier in the week. She had battled ALS and the funeral will be held on Saturday the day before Asantes 31st birthday. Part of the reason why Samuel said he agreed to a trade from Philadelphia to Atlanta prior to the start of the season was to be closer to his mother, who lived in Florida where he grew up. Teammates said at times during the season when they had a bit of a break, Samuel would leave to tend to his mother. Samuel has created a foundation, Bring it Home Single Moms, whose mission is to provide housing, education, support and networking to single moms, according to his foundations...

Does Asante Samuel look like he’s grieving?

In NZ’s version of “Come on Man!” We came across this story posted by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. On Tuesday, the mother of Atlanta Falcon’s cornerback Asante Samuel passed away. The AJC reported that Samuel had left the team to be with his family this week. Unfortunately, when they posted the story it was [...]

Asante Samuel’s mother passes away

When the Falcons next take the field, they'll be doing so with heavy hearts. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Asante Samuel's mother, Christine, passed away Tuesday morning. The four-time Pro Bowl cornerback told the paper in October that she had long been battling an illness -- Lou Gehrig's disease. He missed practice this week to be with his family...

Atlanta Falcons: Wild Card Round Power Rankings (#5)

I’d like to start this off by saying the argument that Matt Ryan can’t go deep into the playoffs because he’s never won a playoff game is ridiculous. Peyton Manning was once 0-3 in the playoffs and he went on to win a Super Bowl. Plus, two of Ryan’s playoff losses came against eventual Super Bowl Champs. Finally, it’s just 3 games. It doesn’t really mean much. However...

This postseason will be different for Falcons

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. With Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith being the sane man that he is, he is trying a different approach than the one he took two years ago, when the Falcons also earned the NFC's top seed for the postseason. First, Smith said that during the bye...

Atlanta Falcons: 5 Reasons Why They Won't Win The Super Bowl

The Atlanta Falcons are going into the 2012 postseason with the No.1 seed in the NFC. They will not have to leave the comfort of the Georgia Dome the whole postseason. No trips to the frozen tundra at Lambeau Field. No trips to the soggy field at Candlestick Park. Cozy indoor weather with no wind to blow kicks around, or precipitation to make the football slick and cause errant passes...

Ryan excited that Koetter staying with Falcons

(Eds: APNewsNow. With AP Photos.) By GEORGE HENRY Associated Press Quarterback Matt Ryan is enjoying his best season in five years with the Atlanta Falcons. So it's no wonder Ryan was delighted to hear that offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter won't be leaving to take a head coaching job with another NFL team. Ryan has worked just one season with Koetter, who has signed a...

Looking Into the Falcons Future

As the NFL’s regular season draws to an end many teams are already starting to make changes for the future of their franchises. Seven Head Coaches and several General Managers were fired on what is now known as Black Monday in the NFL. The Atlanta Falcons aren’t among those teams as they finished up the regular season with a 13-3 record and home-field-advantage in the play-offs...

Falcons Prepare for the Playoffs

We haven't updated the site since the home loss to the Bucs on Sunday. Call it disappointment, apprehension or just bewilderment. Much like the Panthers loss, the Falcons didn't look like they had much interest in playing the game and the Bucs took it to them. In the NFL, you have to be able to put a bad game behind you and get ready to put that chin strap on the next week...

Anatomy of a Play: Asante Intercepts Freeman

Asante Samuel is arguably the best cornerback in the NFL when it comes to jumping routes and picking off throws. He notched his 50th career interception this past Sunday against Josh Freeman and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when he jumped a deep inside route that Tiquan Underwood was running. Underwood is lined up wide right with another Tampa receiver in the slot. The Falcons...
