FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. The Falcons' depth at tackle took a major blow when head coach Mike Smith announced on Monday that their top reserve at that position Will Svitek, who started 10 games last season at left tackle, will miss the entire season with an upper arm injury.
Svitek took over last season for 2008 first-round pick Sam Baker, who started the first six games last season and then lost his job to Svitek for reasons of injury and ineffectiveness.
To start this season, Baker has been back in his customary left tackle position. Svitek also played the jumbo tight end position in short-yardage situations. The position figured prominently in former offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey's system, which was more fun-focused, but might not be as important in new coordinator Dirk Koetter's.
