The deadline for using the franchise tag has come and gone. Eight NFL teams used the franchise tag but unlike last year when we tagged Brent Grimes, the Falcons did not use the tag this season. The most likely candidate for the franchise tag was safety William Moore. The Buffalo Bills tagged safety Jarius Byrd for $6.916 million. That's the price tag that would have been given to Moore if the Falcons had chosen to tag him.  The next date on the calendar for NFL teams (outside of individual players pro days as we head up to the draft) is March 12th. That's the date that teams can start negotiating with free agents.  Will it be quiet up until that date or will the Falcons try to get some of their unrestricted free agents resigned before. The Falcons have some guys like William Moore, Sam Baker, Brent Grimes and Vance Walker that will no doubt draw some interest from other teams. They also need to figure out if Tony Gonzalez is coming or going so we can address that need in free agency if the right player is available. The days until March 12th will be important for the Falcons as we start to formulate the team that will hit the field in 2013. It's the calm before the storm of free agency. Last year the Falcons were quiet in free agency but this year they have a lot more cap room and could be much more active if they choose to be.
