The Falcons are facing a lot of decisions this off-season and that starts with their 14 unrestricted free agents. We will go through them one by one and decide whether or not the Falcons should re-sign them. A lot of times it's not as easy as it looks as some decisions have more than just roster spot implications. We also have to think about the salary cap as it is expected to increase by just $200,000 this season.
Vance Walker is one of the most under-rated players on the Atlanta Falcons roster. Originally a seventh round pick out of Georgia Tech in the 2009 NFL Draft, Walker established himself as a key rotational player in 2011 when he recorded a career high 18 tackles and 2 sacks. In 2012, Walker saw his role expand under Mike Nolan and put up 32 tackles and 3 sacks for the season. Without a doubt Walker is one of the better rotational defensive tackles in the NFL.
Despite having a dip in production in the middle of the year Walker started out very strong and ended very strong according to profootballfocus.com. He was one of Atlanta’s better defensive players in the NFC Championship Game and proved throughout the year that he was a very valuable asset to the defense.
Verdict: Personally I feel the Falcons should resign Walker. He has proven to be a valuable rotational defensive lineman and also provides valuable depth in case of injury. If Walker continues to improve he could easily become the best rotational defensive lineman in the NFL and Atlanta can’t let a player like that walk out the door.
