Birds Show Grit Against Division Enemy Huge Day for Turner (C.Compton/AJC) In a hard fought game with an upstart divisional foe, the Falcons got back to doing what they do best with a gritty win over the Panthers. It wasn’t the prettiest victory in the world, but it showed the Falcons still have potential to achieve some of their original goals for 2011. Obviously, beating a team that was 1-15 in 2010 and were 1-4 before the game started won’t get you much attention from the talking heads confederation, but this was a big one to regain some much needed confidence and hopefully be the first step in a new winning streak. The Birds still have some issues to correct, but they did what they had to do to win the game. 1) Has Lower Playing Level Led to a Depressed Fanbase? It’s not something that Arthur Blank or Rich McKay would want to hear, but the few empty seats might be a product of the way this team has played this season. Atlanta fans are usually late-comers anyway, but this …

Moneyball 2011 – Week 6 Review

Michael Turner had a solid game, and looked like the old Michael Turner throughout this game, breaking tackles and getting yards after contact. Ovie Mughelli looked back to be in his old form. Granted, it did come against a horrible Panthers run defense, but it’s still somewhat promising for the rest of the year. The Falcons dominated a run defense that they should have dominated...

Will The Real Atlanta Falcons Please Stand Up?

I understand the reasoning behind wanting to become a more quick-strike, high-powered offense but the Atlanta Falcons may be missing the big picture. When you look at the success of teams that run these high-scoring passing offenses like the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts (when Peyton Manning is there of course) then you want toâ€...

Falcons’ 2nd Half Offense Comes to Life, Secure Win

This had been the story for at least two of the Falcons’ losses and at least one of their wins: The Falcons score some points in the first half, and then score little to none in the second half. Today however, that changed. Thankfully. The Carolina Panthers and their prized rookie came into town looking for their 2nd win of the season. And they were poised to win. But good...

Falcons vs Panthers – Who Earned Their Wings

Each week, after the game, I will name a few Falcons players who deserve recognition for their performance. We call it earning your wings. Here we go:-The Entire Offensive Line – The last few weeks, the pass protection has been improving (only 2 sacks in the last 3 games). Yesterday was the first time in a long time the Falcons O-Line worked well together in run blocking, especially...

Falcons get back to basics in 31-17 win

When the Falcons made their draft day trade for Julio Jones, there was a lot of talk about a new, more pass-oriented offensive approach in Atlanta. It wasn’t in evidence on Sunday afternoon, but the Falcons got a much needed 31-17 win all the same. The Falcons got a big effort from Michael Turner, who…

Falcons' Abraham healthy; Panthers to play without OT Otah

The Atlanta Falcons' defense has struggled of late but John Abraham's return should provide a big boost as the Falcons look to slow down Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

First quarter blog: Falcons 7, Panthers 3

ATLANTA The Falcons took advantage of a pass interference penalty on Panthers safety Charles Godfrey to take a 7-3 lead on the final play of the first quarter. On second-and-11, the Panthers sent strong safety Sherrod Martin on a blitz. But he was picked up by Michael Turner, giving Matt Ryan time to throw deep to Roddy White, who was interfered with in the end zone by Godfrey. On...
