Atlanta landed big free agent defensive end Ray Edwards during the 2011 offseason. However, after his five-year, $27.5 million contract was signed last year, Edwards has failed to produce as the Falcons had hoped so they cut the veteran on Monday.
Edwards was set to make $3 million in base salary this year with $3 million option bonus that was paid out in March. If he clears waivers, his base salary will be owed to him by the Falcons.
Edwards was a member of the Minnesota Vikings for five seasons before signing with the Falcons and averaged nearly six sacks a season. In 27 games with Atlanta, he recorded just 3.5 sacks (0 in 2012).
