The Falcons went a bit off the board in the third round as they selected offensive tackle Lamar Holmes of Southern Miss. Earlier, the Falcons had traded down in the draft as they gave up their #83 overall pick to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for the #91 and #164 picks.

He's a big boy

Clearly the Falcons are addressing their biggest need from last year, protecting Matt Ryan. The question is how well and how quickly Holmes and Konz will fit in with the offensive line. I don't know much about Holmes at this point so here are some scouting report notes:

Pro Football Weekly: Worked hard to shed weight as a senior, dropping 30 pounds and showed fairly well at the East-West Shrine Game, but has limited value as a right tackle only in the pros.

National Football Post: A big, tall well-proportioned offensive tackle with good girth through the base and a naturally thick frame. Showcases the ability to bend, stay balanced toward the edge and sit into his stance. Isn't real rangy, but understands angles and puts himself in good position to sustain the block. However, has a tendency to stop moving his feet when trying to punch and engage into contact, and routinely can be slipped on the edge. Possesses natural anchor strength, sits down into his base when trying to anchor and works his hands well to gain leverage.

Here's some feedback from the Twitter machine....

The Falcons take Lamar Holmes from Southern Miss. Huge guy that is great in pass protection. Another solid pick.

I don't love Bobbie Massie, but he isn't "clear" over Lamar Holmes as an OT. Falcons in solid force at Shrine Game, Holmes impressed there.

The Falcons' scouting department does their home work. Lamar Holmes is a very good OL. Good stretch at USM
