Falcons sign former Giants RB Wayne Gallman

Former New York Giants running back Wayne Gallman didn't make the final roster of the San Francisco 49ers but will be sticking around the NFC for at least a little longer. 

On Thursday, the Falcons confirmed they've signed Gallman and, in a corresponding roster move, parted ways with ball-carrier Qadree Ollison. 

Gallman first entered the NFL when the Giants drafted him in the fourth round back in 2017, and the 26-year-old spent his first four pro seasons with Big Blue mostly as a backup to other preferred options. He produced his best offensive numbers (682 rushing yards, six rushing touchdowns) during any season in 2020 after star Saquon Barkley suffered a torn ACL on Sept. 20.

The 49ers first signed Gallman as a free agent in April but cut him earlier this week. 

Per Scott Bair and Tori McElhaney of the Falcons' website, Gallman will largely learn behind starter Mike Davis and Cordarrelle Patterson ahead of the regular-season opener versus the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 12 but could be trusted with RB2 duties as quickly as the Week 2 showdown at the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers the subsequent Sunday. 

Interestingly, the Falcons play at the Giants in Week 3 on Sept. 26.
