Losing your starting quarterback is never an easy thing to handle. Peyton Manning and the Colts would argue it comes second only to the apocalypse on their list of worst case scenarios.

When you’ve got a team accustomed to losing like the Kansas City Chiefs, the coach’s objective is to keep his team playing as hard as they can. Keep the team believing in themselves. But it’s tough to ask your team to believe in them when you, the coach, don’t believe in your own team yourself.

After losing quarterback Matt Cassel for the season, the Chiefs wasted no time claiming former Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton on waivers. When the Chiefs picked up Orton, they told backup quarterbacks Tyler Palko and Ricky Stanzi one thing:

You suck.

You suck so much in fact, we trust you and your skills less than Tim Tebow’s backup’s backup.

A coach should never give up. But sometimes realism should prevail. Sometimes, accepting inevitability can be a better investment for the future of a program.

It’s time for Todd Haley to face it; it’s not your year. You lost two of your best offensive weapons early on, and one of your top defenders. Now your quarterback is gone for the year.

The Chiefs aren’t going to win the division. They’ll be lucky to be within a game of third place by season’s end. Why not give your backups six games of invaluable snaps and game-fire experience? If  Haley and the Chiefs really do have faith in Palko, why not not give him more than two games to prove himself? Why not see what you have in your fifth-round draft pick in Stanzi?

And when it comes to Orton, just how many wins is he good for? The Chiefs’still have the Steelers, Bears, Jets, Packers, Raiders and Broncos on the schedule. Is playing Orton over Palko going to tip the scale against any of those opponents? Not the first four. The Raiders? Hard to say four games in. The Broncos? Certainly not if the Tim “The Chosen One” Tebow keeps forgetting how to lose.

In all likelihood, picking up Orton to play over Palko is good for one win in the next six games. If they’re lucky.

Not a very good show of faith by a coach who needs to be doing everything he can to keep his team believing in itself.
