The Falcons may have just added the last piece of the puzzle in their quest to create a truly dynamic and complete offense as they agreed to terms with former Rams running back Steven Jackson on a three-year deal worth $12 million. Jackson turned down $7 million this season alone to play for the Rams, but did so in order to join a contending team in hopes of playing in the Super Bowl. He should have at least a puncher’s chance of doing that as he joins a Falcons team that features Roddy White, Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez and Matt Ryan on offense. For Jackson, this is truly a best case scenario. A washed up Michael Turner was the RB16 in many leagues last year and had 51 carries in the red zone alone (almost twice as many as Jackson) while averaging a less than stellar 3.6 yards per carry, his career low. Jackson averaged over four yards per carry with a putrid offensive line in St. Louis, while posting his eighth straight 1,000 yard season in 2012. Jackson is a true three down workho...

Arthur Blank would like to sign Matt Ryan to an extension before the season

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank told Andrew Siciliano of the NFL Network that he would rather sign quarterback Matt Ryan to extension before this coming season. “It’s important to us to get it done when it makes sense to get it done, and I can’t before the season,” said Blank. “Personally that would probably be my view, but really you have to let the principle….and...

Falcons' defense still needs a lot of attention

ATLANTA The Atlanta Falcons have been proficient at re-signing offensive players. Meanwhile, the defense continues to sport gaping holes, some of which keep getting bigger. On March 1, the Falcons cut three high-profile defenders, including right cornerback Dunta Robinson (91.1 percent of the snaps second most on the unit last year) and right defensive end John Abraham, who played...

The Bucs and Brent Grimes are talking

The Bucs have had a plan all along. Everyone has been trying to figure what exactly they are up to, not signing any help for their secondary. But it seems like they are working how they work, quietly. Free agent cornerback Brent Grimes has drawn interest from a couple teams during free agency. It was reported erroneously last week that he had re-signed with the Falcons. Now it appears...

Atlanta Falcons: Biggest Draft Day Regret In Franchise History

Atlanta may be one of the better teams in the NFL right now, but that certainly has not always been the case. In fact, more often than not, the Falcons have spent the end of the season wallowing in the lower half of the NFL standings. There can be a number of reasons for this lack of success, but bad drafting definitely ranks at the top, and the Falcons have had their fair sure...

Atlanta City Council OKs Plan For New Falcons Stadium

The Atlanta City Council late Monday voted to approve a funding plan for a new downtown Atlanta Falcons stadium, pushing the project over its biggest political hurdle, Ernie Suggs and Tim Tucker of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution report. The council voted 11-4 in favor of the use of city hotel-motel taxes to pay $200 million toward construction costs and potentially several times...

Falcon's Stadium Subsidy

There's been a lot of discussion about the subsidies that Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank negotiated for the team's new stadium. A recent article by The Sports Economist points out that, as stadium subsidies go, this deal is a pretty good one for taxpayers - and Blank.    The estimated construction cost is an eye-popping one billion dollars.  The public...

Free Agent DE Osi Umenyiora Visits The Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are in need of an upgrade for their pass rush after parting ways with John Abraham. Another veteran player is on their radar as Osi Umenyiora made his first visit as a free agent to the Falcons, according to Mike Garafolo of USA Today. There are a handful of veteran defensive ends on the market, including Umenyiora, Abraham, Dwight Freeney and Elvis Dumervil...

Grits Blitz Mailbag: sj39, Draft, Abe & Grimey

Free agency started with a bang but the Falcons rallied the troops and re-signed our own instead of going after high priced free agents. Then the Falcons reached out and nabbed Steven Jackson but more on that later in the mailbag. Now we hear that Osi Umenyiora is in town. Free agency is far from over as the market isn't bearing the money that some free agents thought it would...
