PPR Fantasy Football:
There was never a question about the talent of the New England Patriots’ wide receiver Danny Amendola, injuries have always been his issue – and after an impressive debut with 10 catches for over 100 yards and already the injury bug is hitting the high profile free agent signee as he tries to replace the venerable Wes Welker.
It has already been all but confirmed that Amendola will miss Thursday Night’s AFC East showdown against the New York Jets, which is a killer for fantasy owners, who invested a high draft pick in Amendola but great news if you own Julian Edelman, who’s now a MUST start this week against gang green.
Even with Amendola playing most of the game against Buffalo in Week 1, Edelman was still targeted by Tom Brady nine times, catching seven passes for 79 yards and scoring two touchdowns, good for more than 26 fantasy points in point-per-reception formats.
Edelman was often viewed by Pats’ fans as a poor man’s Welker and has always found ways to make plays out of the slot when given the opportunity. Yet, those have been somewhat rare for Edelman due in part to injuries as well as the vaunted two-tight end offense New England used to implore.
Well this week against the Jets, it’s going to be all about Edelman. Amendola is out. Rob Gronkowski is out. Zach Sudfeld is looking iffy – and with Brady’s next best options in the passing game consisting of three rookies, you can be sure Edelman will get plenty of work Thursday night.
My prediction for Edelman in week two is that he will receive around 12-15 targets, which he should be able to turn into approximately 10 receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown. Brady and the Pats are still going to come out slinging it against the Jets and with Edelman being the focal point of New England’s fast pace offense, he is a definite start in Week 2 of the fantasy season.

After Sunday’s game against Buffalo, I knew that the reaction would be negative overall, even with it being a win. That was certainly my reaction. But in my haste to ignore any icky feeling, I was convinced that all of this mad juju would blow over, and that the New England Patriots were going to improve inevitably. I was convinced that by the time I wrote this preview, confidence...
