Eric Decker, WR, Denver Broncos
FANTASY FOOTBALL ANALYSIS
Eric Decker had a suspected breakout campaign last year, hauling in 85 balls for 1064 yards and 13 touchdowns. Little did I know he was going to be the second option in ppr formats on his own team. Despite teammate Demaryius Thomas being the top breakout star on the team, Decker did a very nice job. He didn’t have as many receptions as Thomas, but he was nearly just as effective and perhaps more surprising was that Decker tied for 7th for points scored among wide receivers. Not bad for a third year receiver with an old and rusty Peyton Manning at the helm.
Prior to the beginning of last season, Decker seemed like the perfect wide receiver for Manning to throw to and that held true to a point. We got to see everything that Decker does well in action last year. He was great after the catch and can gain separation quickly off the line, using double moves and everything in his arsenal. The fact that he can catch nearly everything tossed his way made him a huge target for Manning, who was recovering from nerve damage all last year thanks to the surgery he had in the neck/shoulder area.
Decker should prove to be even better in 2013. A lot of that will have to do with Manning’s arm getting stronger. He doesn’t have the zip that he used to, but he certainly will be able to make a few more tight throws next year. Decker also should continue to improve his route-running as well and improve overall, he’s only 25, so he hasn’t quite hit his prime yet. Decker could be viewed as a low-end #1 WR heading into fantasy drafts and I wouldn’t be surprised if he puts up another 1000 yard season.
