San Francisco 49ers @ New York Jets

San Francisco: So I’m thinking a lot of survivor pools blew up in Week 3 when the 49ers rolled into the Metrodome and laid an egg in front of the Vikings.

If there was one game that seemed a sure thing, it was this one.

Just goes to show you that in the NFL, any given Sunday can go sideways.

Alex Smith and the 49ers will try to rebound on the road against one of the most inconsistent teams in the NFL.

When the good Jets show up, they can play with just about anyone; when the bad Jets show up, the Rex Ryan circus can lose to any team in the league.

No matter what, the Jets play good defense, and even without Darrelle Revis, Smith just isn’t the type that will take advantage enough to make him a fantasy starter.

The Jets are always tough on the run, so that will make Frank Gore a lower level starter for the week, especially since he doesn’t have much of a role anymore in the passing game.

For the receivers, Michael Crabtree looks like a more attractive play without Revis in the game, but the Vikings don’t have a Revis and Crabtree didn’t do a whole lot. At this point, the only 49ers player I’d start with complete confidence besides the defense and David Akers, is Vernon Davis.

Good Start: TE Vernon Davis

Middle of the Road:  RB Frank Gore, WR Michael Crabtree

Bad Start:  QB Alex Smith, RB Kendall Hunter, WR Randy Moss, WR Mario Manningham

New York: Mark Sanchez spent most of the day against the Dolphins slinging the ball, trying to keep his team in the game. He played just well enough to get his team to overtime and escaped with a victory over a team that on paper looks far inferior to them.

Now they face what a lot of experts are calling at least the best team in the NFC, if not the entire NFL. If the Jets are going to have a chance, Sanchez has to be on his game; which is basically a crap-shoot. I’d stay far away from starting him.

Shonn Greene is terrible, and finally his own coaches are starting to notice and give Bilal Powell even more playing time. That’s bad news for whatever value Greene had left, and especially against the 49ers, you’re going to have to bench him.

Santonio Holmes has actually looked pretty good so far this season, and he’s the only Jets player worth playing against the 49ers, especially since it’s fairly certain they’ll be behind in this game.

Good Start: WR Santonio Holmes

Middle of the Road:  None

Bad Start:  The rest of the Jets
