GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Packers tight end Jermichael Finley is on his way back to Green Bay due to the birth of a child and will miss Thursday night's preseason game in Cincinnati against the Bengals, according to his Twitter account.
"A blessing has came into the world," Finley tweeted Thursday morning. "Sorry Fans. 88 is Heading back to GB from Cinny to take care of my Family. Family1st"
Finley missed the Packers' first two preseason games due to a quadriceps injury but was expected to play Thursday after returning to practice earlier this week.
This game is an opportunity for quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay's starting offense to play an entire half together in preparation for the regular season, which is 17 days away. The starters have played no more than one quarter in each of the first two preseason games, and the offense has struggled in the absence of Finley and Greg Jennings (concussion), who will get his first preseason action Thursday.
With Finley unavailable, reserve tight ends such as D.J. Williams, Tom Crabtree and Ryan Taylor will get more opportunities with Rodgers and the first-team offense.
Finley, 25, signed a two-year, 15 million contract extension with the Packers this offseason after setting a career best with 767 receiving yards and tying a career best with 55 catches in 2011.

Packers RB Alex Green
Cedric Benson has only been a member of the Green Bay Packers for slightly over a week, but he’s already been getting reps with the No. 1 offense in training camp.
In just two practices wearing full pads, Benson has broken off a handful of impressive runs, and he certainly appears to be as natural a runner as any running back on the roster. Although he’s...

Packers RB Cedric Benson could provide a boost to the Packers play action game.
In the Green Bay Packers’ 27-13 preseason victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday, Cedric Benson proved some of his worth to the offense. Cedric Benson is “probable” week 1 starter for Packers
After going with a youth movement at running back for the entire offseason, the Packers caved earlier this month and signed veteran running back Cedric Benson after injury prone youngster James Starks suffered a turf toe injury, on top of a rough Training Camp and preseason, that threatened his availability for the regular season. As could be expected, the Packers are likely to start...
Cedric Benson Gives Credibility to Packers Running Game
All offseason the Green Bay Packers have been hoping that someone would step up and take hold of the starting running back position and last night in Cincinnati, the newly acquired Cedric Benson may have done just that with his six-carry, 38 yard performance against his former team.
Benson, who was just signed as a free agent by Green Bay a little over a week ago, is coming...
Packers great Robinson a Hall finalist
Former Green Bay Packers linebacker Dave Robinson is one step closer to enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Robinson, a 71-year-old who played from 1963-72 with the Packers before spending 1973-74 with the Washington Redskins, was named Wednesday as one of the two senior finalists for the Class of 2013. Defensive tackle Curley Culp, 66, is the other nominee. He played...
Packers beat Bengals, work out some bugs.
The Green Bay Packers won their first game of the preseason last night, defeating the Bengals 27-13 in Cincinnati. The win kept the Pack from going 0-3 in the preseason for the first time since 1993. Interesting little piece of trivia there. But more importantly, we finally got to see the first team offense and defense get into a bit more sync than we've seen in the prior two...
Packers Not Giving Up On QB Graham Harrell Just Yet
The Green Bay Packers had a very encouraging performance Thursday night against the Cincinnati Bengals. The team's pass defense was dominant. Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted that Cedric Benson looked like the first "real" running back the team has seen in a while.
The performance of backup quarterback Graham Harrell remains the last item sticking...

Aaron Rodgers TD Run GIF
I have Drew Brees at #1 among QBs because of his consistency over the last 4 years. If there is something that Rodgers does much better than Brees, it’s run the ball. Nice little run here for a TD. S/O to @sbanation for the GIF.
