Well, despite the ongoing defensive deficiencies (and boy are there), the Bengals did manage to win the game on Sunday, and that feels a heck of a lot better than last week. Still, there are glaring problems on the defense.  Ironically, the defense was supposed to carry the offense, but Sunday it was the offense staying working hard to stay one step ahead because the defense was Swiss cheese.  Next up is the Redskins and RGIII, who can make any defense look foolish.  Coach Zimmer’s got his work cut out. In the meantime, let’s review the five keys to victory from last week, and see how our Queen City Cats did: 1.  Contain Richardson:  Didn’t Happen The rookie running back out of Alabama had his coming out party, with 109 yards rushing on 19 carries (5.73 average) with a 32-yard scoring run in which he outran the entire defense to the edge. He also picked up 4 catches for 36 yards, including another brilliant touchdown in which he juked or bowled over 4 Bengal defenders on his way to...

Browns DB Sheldon Brown was Active to Keep Streak Alive

Cleveland Browns veteran cornerback Sheldon Brown was active on Sunday, playing one play, which kept his consecutive games played streak in tact at 162. Missing most of the week’s practices due to a shoulder injury, Brown did not start in Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals; second-year cornerback Buster Skrine drew coverage opposite of Dimitiri Patterson. Taking up one...

Despite improved offense, Browns lose to Bengals 34-27

The Browns ran into a Bengals team with some good offensive playmakers, and ultimately couldn’t stay out of their own way to win it. The three big storylines of the Browns game today will be special teams, replacement defensive backs and penalties even though it could have been Brandon Weeden and Trent Richardson. Unfortunately, the Browns weren’t able to overcome their mistakes...

Browns secondary can't stop Bengals

CINCINNATI -- The Cleveland Browns had a good defensive game in the opener -- and lost. Then they had a good offensive game in the second week -- and lost. Which brings up the question: Is a loss easier to take when the losing team looks good? Or are the Browns, at this point of a season, playing just well enough to lose? Sunday in Cincinnati, the Browns got record-breaking rookie...

Browns’ Young Secondary Still Has Potential Despite Rough Day

There’s no other way to say it than to say that the young guys were overwhelmed yesterday. Trevin Wade got torched. Buster Skrine seemed overmatched and chasing. Eric Hagg played pedestrian when he wasn’t giving up his own touchdown. Look, it’s difficult to lose your top two cornerbacks in between week one and week two of an NFL season. No matter how much planning you do to...

Report: Sheldon Brown Loses Starting CB Job with Browns

According to ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi, CB Sheldon Brown has lost his starting job with the Browns- Prior to Sunday’s game in Cincinnati, Brown had started 128 of his last 129 games. He did not start in Cincinnati because of a shoulder and neck injury. He’s able to play this week, but on Wednesday Brown told ESPNCleveland that he has been taken off the starting unit. ...

Buffalo at Cleveland Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET, at Cleveland Browns Stadium, Cleveland - TV: CBS; DirecTV: 708 *TV announcers: Spero Dedes, Steve Beuerlein *Keys to the game: The Browns zero in on hemming in Bills RB C.J. Spiller, who brings an average of over 10 yards per carry (29 carries, 292 yards) into the game, and take their chances with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bills needed...

Browns To Start Skrine, Patterson At Corner; Week 2 Inactives Announced

The Browns released their inactive list for this afternoon’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Paul Brown Stadium. Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, running back Brandon Jackson, wide receiver Jordan Norwood, offensive lineman Oniel Cousins, linebackers James-Michael Johnson and Tank Carder, and safety and special teamer Ray Ventrone will not be on the active roster today. It appears...

Browns' Jackson off to a fast start

BEREA Despite the Browns being winless in two games, team captain DQwell Jackson is off to arguably the best start of his seventh NFL season. He had a career best three sacks against the Bengals, three QB hurries, two tackles for loss, as well as an interception. Jackson has an interception in each game, as well as a fumble recovery to go with his eight tackles. Jackson didnt know...

The Cleveland Browns: Ten observations from the Browns vs Bengals game

Brandon Weeden played like a 28 year old 1st round draft pick, and that’s a compliment. He broke rookie QB passing records, and that list includes Bernie Kosar, Brian Sipe, Otto Graham and Eric Zeier to bring the list and the accomplishment back to reality. I was one of the biggest screamers that if he did not improve he would have to get yanked by week 6.  After a 26-37...

Browns' rushing game gaining traction

BEREA It is not surprising that the highest ranked unit for the Browns comes with the emergence of the teams top draft pick. After last weeks 130-yard rushing performance against the Bengals, the Browns are ranked 7th in the AFC and tied for 11th overall in the NFL, with the Panthers. Trent Richardson rushed for 109 yards on 19 carries for a lofty 5.7 average and a touchdown. He...

Dalton throws 3 TDs, Bengals beat Browns 34-27

Not even a breakout game by Cleveland's rookie playmakers could change the outcome of Ohio's intrastate series. Adam ''Pacman'' Jones returned Cleveland's first punt 81 yards for a touchdown Sunday, and Andy Dalton matched his career high with three touchdown passes, leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a 34-27 victory in their one-sided rivalry. The Bengals...

LB Scott Fujita playing for Browns vs Bengals

Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita is playing for the first time since his three-game bounty suspension was temporarily overturned on appeal. Fujita practiced last week, showing he was recovered from a leg injury in training camp. He sat out an opening loss to the Eagles. The Browns are short-handed at cornerback against the Bengals on Sunday. Joe Haden is serving the first...

Dalton's 3 TDs lead Bengals over Browns

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Not even a breakout game by Cleveland's rookie playmakers could change the outcome of Ohio's intrastate series. Adam "Pacman" Jones returned Cleveland's first punt 81 yards for a touchdown Sunday, and Andy Dalton matched his career high with three touchdown passes, leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a 34-27 victory in their one-sided rivalry...

First and 10: Some positives to an 0-2 team

1) There are times when I look back and think I might have been too hard on a team. Sunday seemed like a game the Browns could have won -- had they had a secondary. But perhaps in the weariness of watching the Browns lose -- Josh Cribbs phrased it losing and sucking on Twitter -- the half-empty side took over. So lets go to the half-full side: That was as good an offensive one-two...

Week 2 has arrived and the picks are in, Matt, Dave and Jeremy have jumped out to an early lead, but how long will they stay on top. Here are the games we’ll be picking for this week. Week 2 Bears v Packers/Browns v Bengals/Ravens v Eagles/Saints v Panthers/ Lions v 49ers/Broncos v Falcons   James Packers Their offense can’t be stagnant forever, and for my fantasy team James...
