Outstanding defensive proformance

Seattle 21, Oakland 3
When: 7:00 PST, Thursday, August 30, 2012
Where: CenturyLink Field, Seattle, Washington
Temperature: 70

If you read my pre-game post, you already know that I took my nephew to his first Seahawks game tonight.  It was the perfect evening to do so.

As I stated in that post my nephew was not a Seahawks fan, he is a Buccaneers fan.

Today, I am a proud uncle.  After the Seahawks pounded the Raiders for 60 minutes, and he experienced the power of the 12th man, he has been converted.

Honestly, I think this has been the easiest week of the preseason to select 5 players to write about.

Jeremy Lane #1

Jeremy Lane is definitely one of the players who needed to have a big game.  The lack of passing offense, or offense in general for that matter from the Raiders made it difficult for Lane to shine.

Despite limited opportunities, Jeremy made an outstanding play when he intercepted a Matt Leinart pass.  The ball was tipped by the receiver, yet Jeremy was able to maintain his concentration and made an adjustment to the trajectory of the ball.

Matt Flynn #15

I believe Matt Flynn is a starting caliber quarterback.  Thursday night he played with the second unit and played very well.  Flynn went 11 of 13 for 102 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders.  The offense moved the ball very well when Matt was on the field.

He may not be as exciting to watch as Russell Wilson, evertheless, when you put Matt in the game he is effective.

I have been waiting all preseason for a reason to be excited about Bruce Irvin

Kregg Lumpkin #20

Earlier in the week the Seahawks released Tyrell Sutton.  I think releasing Sutton gave Lumpkin a golden opportunity to win a roster spot.  Pete Carroll gave Kregg a lot of playing time where Lumpkin displayed his talents.

Not only did he see time at running back, the Seahawks also lined him up at full back.  Out of the backfield Kregg Lumpkin had 20 carries for 71 yards and 2 receptions for another 10 yards.

His fumble is not what the Seahawks are looking for, but it looks like he can play both positions behind the quarterback.

Sean McGrath #45

Much like the interception by Jeremy Lane, Sean McGrath made an outstanding adjustment to a pass that was tipped.  Matt Flynn did not get enough touch on a ball and a linebacker tipped it.

McGrath kept his concentration and made a 24 yard reception.

Bruce Irvin #51

I have been waiting all preseason for a reason to be excited about Bruce Irvin, tonight he delivered.  For the first time as a Seahawk I saw Irvin become a factor in the game.

He was able to get pressure on the quarterback (1.5 sacks) and proved to be a nuisance in the running game.

Bruce made a mistake in the second quarter by losing his backside contain, when the running back switched directions he was out of position to make a play.

The very next play Oakland ran a similar play and Irvin corrected his mistake.

The Seahawks defense remains the biggest story of the preseason.  In 4 games they gave up 54 points (13.5 per contest).

Pretty impressive, even in the preseason.
