Will Charles Woodson at safety improve the Packers defense up the middle? Doesn’t it seem like the middle of the field is 20 yards wider whenever the Packers defense is out there? Packers defenders always seem a step behind covering a receiver down the middle and off-balance when trying to make an open-field tackle between the hash marks. If teels like there’s too much space for them to cover. Green Bay struggled to cover the middle of the field last season, even before Nick Collins got hurt. So far this preseason, it doesn’t look like much has improved. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s early, but man, I don’t think I can handle another season of Packers’ corners giving receivers a 10-yard cushion, then looking helpless as opposing teams pick apart the middle. I realize the middle of the field is difficult to defend for all teams, not just the Packers. I also realize that every offense tries to attack the middle, especially in this day and age of rules that favor offense, tight ends that can...

What’s Going On With Ted Thompson?

Former Bears/Bengals running back Cedric Benson, How many of you were caught off guard with the Reggie Wells signing?  How about the Cedric Benson signing?  Me too.  Now for all of us who think we know Ted Thompson, we’d naturally think that in response to the spate of injuries (which is also unusually high enough for a training camp that head coach Mike McCarthy has had to...

Packers Film Study: Can Alex Green Pass Protect?

Alex Green When Alex Green was drafted by the Packers, I have to admit, I knew little about him. My draft research at that time was focused on the Packers’ positions of primary need; outside linebacker and offensive tackle. So when the Packers selected Green in the third round, two things popped into my head. First, if ted Thompson used a third round pick on a running back, he...

Walking Wounded: Eight Packers Candidates for Injured Reserve Or PUP

TE Andrew Quarless will probably start the year on the PUP list. The first NFL roster cut-down of the season is fast approaching. On Monday, August 27th, the Green Bay Packers will need to have trimmed their roster down to 75 players from their current total of 90. Even though these are essentially the worst players on the team, the decision of who to cut is a tough one. Not only...

Packers News: Dave Robinson nominated for HOF, Jerry Kramer not

Former Packers LB Dave Robinson The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced its two senior nominees for 2013 on Wednesday. The class of 2013 will not be elected until February, but Wednesday’s news elicited two very different reactions from fans of the Green Bay Packers. The good news–linebacker Dave Robinson was named as a finalist for enshrinement. Robinson was selected to three...

Harrell still has plenty of Packers' support

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- If Aaron Rodgers is forced to miss any games this season due to injury, clearly the Green Bay Packers would not be the same team no matter who the backup quarterback is. After all, Rodgers is the NFL's Most Valuable Player and is the biggest reason why the Packers led the league in scoring last season. But in recent years, Green Bay was in reliable hands in...

Packers hope offense can tame the Bengals

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Packers are 0-2 so far this preseason and have yet to look very good in many areas. This week, however, when the team travels to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals, Green Bay's starters will see much more action than they have in preseason games to this point.Picking up a win is not the main goal, but a strong performance is needed from the Packers on offense...

Green Bay Packers: Maurice Jones-DrewThe Perfect Solution

Very rarely does a team go 15-1 in the NFL. Any team posting a record that good has a chance to get a little cocky and maybe even think that they don’t have much room for improvement. In the case of the Green Bay Packers, there is clearly a great deal of improvement needed in both the ground attack and the running game and they are aware of both. The Packers did their best to address...

Packers great Robinson a Hall finalist

Former Green Bay Packers linebacker Dave Robinson is one step closer to enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Robinson, a 71-year-old who played from 1963-72 with the Packers before spending 1973-74 with the Washington Redskins, was named Wednesday as one of the two senior finalists for the Class of 2013. Defensive tackle Curley Culp, 66, is the other nominee. He played...

Packers CB Bush ready to lead secondary

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Now that Packers cornerback Jarrett Bush is back to getting the majority of his snaps with Green Bay's first-team defense in practice this week, the seventh-year veteran doesn't see any reason why he shouldn't stay in that spot throughout the entire upcoming regular season."It's my time, I feel like, to take on that starting role," Bush...

Benson was drafted 20 spots before Rodgers

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Aaron Rodgers has not forgotten what it was like sitting in the green room during the 2005 NFL draft, waiting around as 23 other players were picked before the Green Bay Packers finally called his name. Cedric Benson, recently signed by the Packers, was one of the players Rodgers had to watch take the stage, shake the commissioner's hand and put on the hat...

Benson’s Only Incentive Is To Win

Veteran running back Cedric Benson rushed for 1,067 yards last season Cedric Benson signed a one-year contract worth the veteran’s minimum ($825,000) earlier in the week. That’s not surprising. A 29-year-old running back with baggage isn’t going to command much coin in today’s NFL. The surprise is that the deal includes no incentives. But after listening to what the former...
