To no one’s surprise, the replacement refs were a topic of discussion during the second week of the 2012 campaign. And like usual, the discussion began shortly after the scabs negatively impacted a game, the Ravens-Eagles tilt in this instance.

In the wild affair, which saw the Eagles barely emerge victorious, 24-23, the zebras were sluggish, taking an excessively long time to sort out penalties and keep things moving along.

They also took a Ravens touchdown off the board, calling receiver Jacoby Jones for offensive pass interference after hauling in a well-placed, 25-yard score. To say the least, it was a questionable call and easily could’ve stood.

For Joe Flacco, enough is enough.

In his post-game press conference, the Ravens quarterback slammed the officials, whom he accuses of “affecting the integrity of the game.”

Flacco is normally mild-mannered and reserved, so it says a lot for him to make these comments. Though, he wasn’t alone. Baltimore coach John Harbaugh also took his shots, referring to the three and a half hour game as “chaotic.”

It wasn’t mentioned, but another embarrassing moment occurred late in the fourth quarter. With the Eagles driving, about to take the lead, quarterback Michael Vick was hit while throwing the ball. The refs ruled it a fumble, despite it being a plain-as-day incomplete pass. Overturning the decision should’ve taken 30 seconds, especially at that critical juncture. It ended up lasting several minutes before finally announcing that Philadelphia had retained possession.

Even though the referees eventually got it right, the actions in at least this particular game continue to cast a giant black eye upon the league. With so many complaints lodged in a short amount of time, we could only hope this brings a faster resolution to an unfortunate issue.
