After starting the season 3-1, the Philadelphia Eagles have lost three consecutive games, and the team is reeling.During the bye week, head coach Andy Reid (whose job security is as shaky as ever) fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, hoping to spur a change in a defense that has struggled this year. But it didn’t seem to make much of a difference in the team’s most recent loss, a 30-17 drubbing at the hands of the undefeated Atlanta Falcons. As a result, Reid hinted that a change may be coming at quarterback.Starter Michael Vick, who has struggled this season with 11 turnovers (8 interceptions, 3 fumbles), and may be benched in favor of rookie Nick Foles. Reid hadn’t made up his mind as of Tuesday, but who should get the nod against the New Orleans Saints next Monday night? Then again, does it really matter? The Eagles have numerous problems that are even bigger than their quarterback. The offensive line has played poorly, providing little protection for Vick and not very many holes for running back LeSean McCoy. Their defense has been mediocre, at best. So why make a change at quarterback now? Because Reid has nothing to lose.Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has already intimated that Reid’s job could be in jeopardy if the team doesn’t make the playoffs. So switching to Foles, the rookie out of Arizona who showed promise during training camp, wouldn’t be that much of a risk for Reid.In addition, reports are that Reid considered benching Vick last season when the team got off to a 3-6 start, so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.Regardless of what happens, the Eagles better start blocking and tackling if they want to salvage their season. Otherwise, it won’t matter who the starter is. And they’ll go down in the history books as yet another self-proclaimed “Dream Team” that never lived up to its potential.Maybe we’ll see you in San Diego/Los Angeles in 2013, Andy.Other random observations from Week 8 in the NFL:I officially take back what I said last week about the Tampa Back Buccaneers' throwback uniforms. The Pittsburgh Steelers' throwbacks are the most hideous ones I’ve seen yet. What are they, Australian Rules Football jerseys?New York Giants' head coach Tom Coughlin is still irked about the way the game clock worked at the end of his team’s 29-24 over the Dallas Cowboys. How about directing that anger at someone who deserves it, like shoddy play by his team’s defensive backs?Brace yourselves, Fox viewers – Joe Buck will be back in the booth with Troy Aikman this week. And I was wondering why watching Giants games were slightly more enjoyable the past two weeks…
