The NFL is aware it’s about to have a problem. In four years, the league will celebrate its 50th Super Bowl. For now, it will be called Super Bowl L. Yuck. Super Bowl Loser? Worse, every Super Bowl from Super Bowl 50 to Super Bowl Bowl 89 _ or the year 2054 _ will start with the Roman numeral L. As LIV, LX (which is OK for cars, I guess) to _ get this _ LXXXVIII. Seriously? Don’t get me wrong, I loved the majestic tinge that Roman numerals gave to the sports world’s biggest game. There is something grandiose about X or XV. Anything with X, V or I is pretty cool. But “L?” The Roman numeral L is OK when coupled with X or V or I. Nobody in America understands what any Roman numeral outside of X, V or I means, but the recently completed Super Bowl XLVI looked nice, if a bit busy, on a logo.
