Former Arizona State, BYU 4-Star QB Jacob Conover Enters Transfer Portal

Former 4-Star Quarterback Jacob Conover has entered the transfer portal following a season with Arizona State. Conover previously played for BYU Football for two seasons before transferring last year to ASU.

Pete Nakos, a transfer portal reporter for On3.com first reported the announcement.

Looking For the Right Fit

Jacob Conover who played for Chandler High School, one of the more known teams in the state of Arizona, was heavily recruited by teams including Alabama, Arizona, Memphis, Arizona State, and BYU.

At BYU, Conover played first as a third-string quarterback behind current Minnesota Viking Jaren Hall and Baylor Romney in 2021 and as a backup again in 2022. Halfway through the season, Hall suffered a rib injury, but coaches seemed to struggle to trust Conover enough to put him in despite the injury.

At Arizona State, Conover found himself buried on the depth chart. Still, even as the fourth-string quarterback, he found an opportunity and didn’t take advantage of it, going 11 for 38 for 130 yards and three interceptions.

Alabama doesn’t just offer scholarships to anyone. High School players aren’t just handed 4-stars for no reason at all. At one point, Conover was considered one of the most sought-after high school quarterbacks in the nation; he just hasn’t found the right fit yet. The talent is there, Conover may just need to find the right fit.

Likely Landing Spot for Jacob Conover

The talent and potential is there. Conover is likely going to find himself on a G5 team that is looking for someone who has P5 experience and the potential to play at a high level. Sometimes, some players perform better when they don’t feel the need to prove themselves as the backup or third/fourth-string quarterback.

If Conover can go into a program with the title of likely starter, maybe that is all he will need to find his old self and lead a team to a successful season.
