I never saw former Chiefs running back Joe Delaney play, since I wasn’t even born when he was a rookie in 1981 and when he passed in 1983 I was only a few months old.  But after watching this small piece on his life and legacy, I was inspired to write this in remembrance of him. Delaney was not only a great football player, but a hero who died trying to save the lives of others. Need NFL Tickets? • Yes, Joe Delaney was a hero. But I take issue with the article's headline. When Joe died, he was a Chiefs running back, not a "former" Chiefs running back. He had just experienced a breakout season, and this little (by NFL standards) guy with a great big heart was poised on the brink of greatness. People who weren't around then could read "former" and think his career was already over when he died, when nothing could have been further from the truth.

30 years after his death, ex-Chief Joe Delaney's legacy lives on

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Sedarius has Grandpa's grace, Grandpa's fifth gear. Carolyn Delaney can scarcely believe it herself. Lord, there it is: Joe's gait. Joe's burst. It's like a ghost chasing a ghost. The Kansas City Chiefs are full of confidence after switching regimes, hiring Andy Reid as head coach, and trading for Alex Smith.
