Former Detroit Lions CB Cameron Sutton charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, released from jail
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

On Monday, former Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton appeared in a Florida court, where he was charged with one misdemeanor count of domestic battery, according to the “Detroit Free Press.” Sutton initially turned himself into authorities on Sunday evening.

Police first issued a warrant for his arrest on March 7. A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office bulletin post noted that Sutton was taken in at 8:24 p.m. ET on Sunday.

“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” said sheriff Chad Chronister in a press release. “Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”

Sutton allegedly assaulted a woman in Lutz, Florida. Sutton was said to be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoner with Florida license plate AZ33QB, and at the time authorities encouraged anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to get in touch.

Sutton, 29, is coming off his first season with the Lions. The Lions released Sutton a day after an arrest warrant was announced. On March 25, team president Rod Wood reflected on the whirlwind situation.

“We were learning it the same moment you guys were learning about the warrant,” Wood told reporters at the NFL’s annual meeting. “Actually, I was on a Zoom call with the league on another matter when it popped up on my phone.

“As soon as that call wrapped up, we kind of quickly convened and talked about it. We were able to reach Cam and talk about it, and suggested that he get counsel and do the right thing to turn himself in. And then after that, we met the rest of the day and then the following morning to decide to release him.”

He started all 17 games for the Lions, tallying a career-high 65 tackles (50 solo), four tackles for loss, one interception and six passes defended. Sutton spent the previous six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who selected him in the third-round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tennessee.

He appeared in 84 games (39 starts) for Pittsburgh, compiling 168 tackles (143 solo), eight tackles for loss, eight interceptions and 38 passes defended.

Cameron Sutton signed a three-year, $33 million deal with $22.5 million guaranteed with the Lions last offseason. He was slated to start at corner this season alongside Carlton Davis, whom Detroit acquired from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this offseason. Now, Sutton’s future in the NFL is uncertain.
