Merling was signed by Green Bay earlier in the offseason
The Packers quietly signed Phillip Merling a few weeks after the Dolphins released the veteran defensive end. Based on what I read out of Miami, I was expecting the former Clemson star to be a cross between Jamal Reynolds and Justin Harrell. But after watching four Dolphins games from last season, I’m feeling better about this acquisition.
Don’t get me wrong, Merling is nothing special. He started Miami’s opener at right defensive end, but after jumping offsides on his first play and falling to the ground untouched on his second, he saw only sporadic action the rest of the day. What I saw in that game, and in the other three I watched, was a decent rotational defensive lineman. Merling did an adequate job versus the run when he kept his pad level low, but for some reason he tended to rise off the snap. That’s something defensive line coach Mike Trgovac will obviously be focusing on all summer. As a pass rusher, the 27-year-old...

D.J. Smith needs to show he's a better tackler than A.J. Hawk to win the starting job.
I had a 900-word post drafted about what D.J. Smith has to do to overtake A.J. Hawk as the Packers starting ILB alongside Desmond Bishop, but I scrapped most of it.
Why? Because what Smith has to do to win the job is simple.
He needs to tackle.
If I’m D.J. Smith, I wouldn’t even wait until...
Dom Capers might just go "Psycho" this year.
There has been some chatter recently about undrafted rookie Dezman Moses and the eyebrow-raising attention he has received from fellow defensive players. Though yet to put on “the pads,” the Packers linebacker has created quite a stir among fans, who have been desperately waiting for some good news when it comes to the team’s...
There is not much structure in the Packers early-season schedule.
I’m one of those people that shows up early to work and tries to get as much done as possible before other people start filing into the office and my phone starts ringing.
Yeah, it’s no fun dragging myself out of bed at 5:15 a.m., but once I get to the office and get rolling, it’s nice to have a few hours of...
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Long hair in the NFL is not uncommon. Despite the fact a player's lengthy locks can legally be pulled on or grabbed by an opponent and that they can frequently get stuck in a helmet, shoulder pads or other equipment, there are still several examples of long hair on every team across the league.
However, the NFL may have a new champion in the fantastic follicles...
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- When the Packers used the 23rd overall pick in the 2010 draft to select offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga, it made sense. At the time, veteran left tackle Chad Clifton was about to begin his 11th NFL season at age 34, and his days as a starter appeared to be winding down.
Bulaga, who played left tackle at Iowa and was the Big Ten's offensive lineman of the year...
A lot of players in the NFL like to rock the long hair look — particularly defenders. While offensive players are welcome to sport it as well, it’s a little more risky since it is part of the uniform and something defenders can grab onto to bring them down. Oftentimes we will see a running back get taken down by his dreads and wonder why he doesn’t just get a haircut. As Packers...
With one week to go in the NFL Network's"Top 100 Players" countdown, five players from the Green Bay Packers roster have already made the list. There will certainly be a sixth Packer added in next week's finale of the weekly TV series, but where will quarterback and NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers wind up?It only seems logical that Rodgers should be atop the...
The Green Bay Packers have the second easiest schedule going into 2012. This is based off of 2011 schedule so take what you want from it. The New England Patriots have the easiest schedule so both franchises appear to be a lock for the playoffs. Yep, I just said that in June. Hell, let’s take it a step further and make the Losersbracket.com call of the summer: Packers...
Packers rookie safety Jerron McMillian may have NFL's longest hair
James Jones Apparently Wants to Stay in Green Bay. Just would like the ball a little more.
Aaron Rodgers torched the NFL last season. On his way to 15 wins, Rodgers did whatever he wanted to opposing defenses. When given time, he picked secondaries apart. When faced with pressure, he easily galloped for a first down. And if he wanted to kick field goals, he probably would...
After taking a pretty big step back in his second season at nickel back, we hear Sam Shields is far from being assured of a roster spot this coming season. The way we hear it, unless Shields greatly improves his tackling skills, which were feeble for the most part last season, and sheds his knack for peeking into the backfield, he could be in trouble with a host of challengers, led...
