Former Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed cleared waivers yesterday and his agent is reporting that Reed has received offers from two teams. If any team had claimed Reed off the waiver wire, that team would have been responsible for the 1.16 million remaining on his contract from the Steelers. The Steelers are now obligated to pay the remainder of his salary for the 2010 season.
Between 2007-2009, Reed was the NFL’s most accurate field goal kicker, but he has struggled mightily this season. Reed’s agent, Don Henderson told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the kicker was going to take this week off.
To replace Reed, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed free agent K Shaun Suisham. Suisham has been in the league for five seasons, however he only has kicked for an entire season twice, 2007-2008 with the Washington Redskins. Suisham is a career 79% field goal kicker and has made only 3 of 9 kicks from 50 yards or more.
