NFL Draft Zone:
Former Honolulu nightclub owner Michael Miske was accused of assaulting a professional football player. The alleged assault happened just days before the 2013 Pro Bowl. Washington Redskins offensive lineman Trent Williams had to get stitches and sat out of the game after being hit in the head with what police called a “dangerous instrument.” It happened at the M Nightclub in downtown Honolulu.
“I have since been notified, both through representatives of the NFL and the Washington Redskins, that neither party now are willing to come back. So the state is not ready to proceed and to be honest, at this point to be honest, doesn’t see the ability to be able to proceed,” Deputy Prosecutor Kaina Awong said.
That prompted Miske’s, attorney Thomas Otake, to ask that the second-degree assault charge be dropped against his client. The motion was granted by Circuit Court Judge Michael Wilson.
“We’re obviously happy that justice has prevailed, that these charges which we believe were based on false allegations against Mr. Miske have been dismissed. We’ve said all along that he was innocent in this case,” Otake said.
Otake has claimed all along that the players were misbehaving on the night the incident occurred.
“The players were being unruly and as I have said from the beginning, the club and club personnel did what they had to do to protect their staff, their customers, and the public from these unruly players,” Otake said.
Otake hopes folks take notice of the dismissal.
“We’re hopeful that it in some small way starts to repair some of the damage done to Mr. Miske’s reputation,” Otake said.
Miske’s legal troubles aren’t over yet. He and another man are accused of a separate assault. That case is set to go to trial in November.
