Recently former Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown said that his old Raiders head coach sabotaged the team’s chances for winning Super Bowl XXXVII. This started a huge media blitz to see if there was any truth to what Brown had said. Tim Brown said, “It’s hard to say Callahan sabotaged the Super Bowl. You know, can you really say that? That can be my opinion, but I can’t say for a fact that that’s what his plan was, to sabotage the Super Bowl. He hated the Raiders so much that he would sabotage the Super Bowl so his friend Gruden can win the Super Bowl. That’s hard to say, because you can’t prove it.” To make things worse for Callahan Hall of Famer Jerry Rice threw in his opinion on the subject. He agreed with Tim Brown’s notion yesterday when he was on ESPN talking about the situation. Rice said, “For some reason and I don’t know why Bill Callahan did not like me. In a way, maybe because he didn’t like the Raiders, he decided, ‘Hey look, maybe we should sabotage this a little bit and let Jon Gruden go out and win this one.’” Tim Brown felt something was up when Callahan changed the team’s offensive game plan just two days before going up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII. Tampa Bay went on to win that game. Before Jon Gruden was the head coach of the Super Bowl Champion Buccaneers he was the Radiers head coach. Upon hearing these accusations Callahan released a statement to the Dallas radio station 105.3 FM The Fan. He said, “I am shocked, saddened and outraged by Tim Brown’s allegations and Jerry Rice’s support of those allegations. To leave no doubt, I categorically and unequivocally deny the sum and substance of their allegation. To suggest otherwise, especially at this time when it involves the Super Bowl, is ludicrous and defamatory.” Another Raiders player added his feelings on whether Callahan threw the game. One time Raiders offensive lineman Frank Middleton said, ”Callahan hated us. He didn’t want to see a lot of us succeed because of who we were. I do believe Callahan had bad feelings against us. But to say he threw the game, I can’t say that.” Jerry Rice and Jon Gruden work at ESPN so it will be interesting if there is any interaction between the two of them on this issue. Callahan is the offensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys and is trying to move past this issue that Tim Brown brought to the attention of the sports world. To me why would you ever try to not with a Super Bowl? If what Tim Brown and other former Raiders suggests Callahan must have really hated the Raiders organization to lose the biggest game of his coaching career on purpose.
