Rumor has been spreading rapidly that Norv Turner is out of a job this year unless the Chargers get to the Super Bowl. There is a guy in the booth who wants the job. That would be former Steelers coach Bill Cowher.
Cowher has been waiting for the right oppurtunity to come back. He has made it known that he does not want to rebuild. He wants a veteran team who he can turn around quickly. San Diego is just that.
I honestly believe this is the team Cowher has been waiting for the entire time. Norv Turner is always under the gun in San Diego. His job is on the line every year. Cowher has just been biding his time and waiting for the inevitable. That time seems to have come.
San Diego also has Cowher’s quarterback. Phillip Rivers was number one on Cowher’s list coming out of North Carolina State. If he were on the board when the Steelers drafted at pick number 11 then there would be no Ben Roethlisberger on the Steelers. Cowher loves Rivers and always has. He is probably chomping at the bit to get a chance to have him on his team.
The Chargers also have the tools that Cowher is looking for. They have a franchise running back in Ryan Matthews. The wide receiver position is set with Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd and Antonio Gates at Tight End. They have a young fast defense with a veteran presence in the middle. They have a playmaking safety in Eric Weddle. He may not be Polamalu but he is a playmaker. Just the type of team Cowher loves.
Cowher could take this team to the Super Bowl within 2 years of being in San Diego. The team will not have the slow start that they are known for. They would be solid from week one and with the division as weak as it is in the west the Chargers could end up with a bye in the playoffs for a change. They could live up to the potential that they have had for years now.
If A.J. Smith is fired a long with Turner the Steelers could have some worry on their hands. Kevin Colbert and Omar Khan are both Cowher guys. Colbert has been our savior in the draft room and in Free Agency. Omar Khan has by some amazing means kept us under the Salary Cap year in and year out. Both of these guys could be potential targets of Cowher’s right off the bat.
The Chargers are also built for a 3-4 defense. Our Linebacker Coach Keith Butler has been up for a Defensive Coordinator position for the past couple of years. He has not left because he is loyal to the Steelers. If Colbert goes to San Diego the familiarity may lead Butler down the path right behind him.
All of this will only matter if Cowher takes the job. I have a hunch though that this is the one he has been waiting for all a long.
