The New England Patriots will have a hot competition at the No. 2 tight end position with Michael Hoomanawanui, D.J. Williams, Asa Watson and Justin Jones the top contenders for the right to be Rob Gronkowski's wing man. The No. 2 TE position in the Patriots offense is a critical one that requires the ability to block, getting open from an inline position, or split out in the slot or outside the hashmarks. Michael Hoomanawanui has the skill set closest to the 'move' position that put the player just about anywhere on the field. According to Larry Hartstein of CBS Sports, it will be a heated battle with Hoomanawanui going into training camp as the expected favorite. However, Williams is the only player capable of playing the "F" position in the Patriots' offense and will push for a role in two tight-end sets. Hartstein writes: 'The paper projects Michael Hoomanawanui to beat out D.J. Williams, Asa Watson and Justin Jones for the No. 2 job. A five-year vet, Hoomanawanui is a 6-4, 260-pounder who "runs good routes over the middle but does not have the long speed to threaten a defense vertically down the seam," the paper said. He has caught 20 of 26 targets over the past two seasons, with one drop.'
