As the end of the week approaches, a pair of OWS contributors banter about some of the important (and not so important) news items of the week.

…the Thursday night game. So people are going a little nuts this morning about Tebow and how all he does is win and how you don’t need to be able to throw well to be a good quarterback. I mean, look at Mark Sanchez, he can’t throw either and he’s…oh. But doesn’t last night’s game say a little bit more about what a disaster the Jets are right now rather than how good Tebow is? This all-running offense is going to get crushed by better teams down the road. Remember when everyone thought the Wildcat was going to revolutionize the game? It gave Miami a spark for like, half a season, before teams caught up to it. I suspect the same thing happens to Denver, unless they have the Hartford Blues and the Milwaukee Badgers coming up on the schedule. I am with you. Although, the AFC West is the “sisters of the poor” division of the NFL. So maybe the Broncos will be playing worse teams than the CFL’s Argonauts. Here’s Denver’s schedule; @Chargers, @Vikings, Bears, Patriots, @Bills, and Chiefs. There are at least a pair of winnable games in there. Remarkable, with the Bronco’s mid-season success, once again the AFC Wild Wild West is a crapshoot. I will concede that until the division resolves itself, this is Tebow’s unofficial theme music.

…smoking rates in the US. I was interested in this poll because I live in a hipster area of Brooklyn, where I would have to guess 80% of people smoke because, of course, there’s nothing more ironic than smoking. Weird that Hawaii is so low on the list. You would think with all the time people spend outdoors over there, people would be more inclined to blow a smoke. Hm. Guess it’s hard to smoke a cigarette with a meth pipe in your mouth. The first thing that immediately jumped out to me was the difference between the top of this list and the bottom of this list. The list is practically cut in two by the mason dixon line. The south being the more likely smokers, and the north the less likely. Utah, at the very bottom, is also a rather large outlier. What vices do they partake in out there?

…Matt Leinart AND Vince Young starting on Sunday. Wow. What year is this? It’s shocking, but I’m a little surprised that both of these guys are even still in the league, let alone the top backups on their respective teams. Even crazier, if you look back at the 2005 national championship game, THEY’RE the footnotes. That game had guys like Brian Cushing, Rey Maualuga, Sam Baker, Jamaal Charles, and Brian Orakpo. Imagine the party Leinart and Young will throw if they both win?
If either guy was half as good a pro football player as they are a pro party-boy, the league would need to be put on notice. As of now, the only people noticing these two are strippers and college freshman in So Cal.
