Both teams made their fair share of mistakes in this game, but the Redskins capitalized on the Steelers’ mistakes, while the Steelers did not make the most of their opportunities.
The Redskins got on the board first thanks to their defense. Redskins OLB Ryan Kerrigan picked off a pass from Ben Roethlisberger and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. Maurkice Pouncey on the play prior was manhandled by Barry Cofield. Cofield ended up sacking Roethlisberger on that play.
After starting off the game shaky, Ben Roethlisberger delivered on his third drive of the game. Ben completed every pass during the third drive. But the offensive line hurt the Steelers on this particular drive, and it probably is the reason why they were kept out of the endzone. Mike Adams and Maurkice Poucey both had penalties that cost the Steelers yards. Pittsburgh finished the drive with a Shaun Suisham field goal very early in the second quarter. The Redskins remained in the lead 7-3.
Midway in the second quarter, Ryan Kerrigan forced a fumble and the Redskins recovered. On the very next play, tJarvis Jones rushed behind the line untouched and caused a fumble, Ike Taylor recovered.
The Steelers fumbled again after forcing the Redskins to fumble. The Redskins then followed up with a touchdown. Rex Grossman connected on a 10 yard pass to Leonard Hankerson to increase the Redskins lead 14-3 with less than 6 minutes left in the game. Rex Grossman was very good on that scoring drive.
The Steelers cut the Redskins’ lead to 8 with a 30 yard Shaun Suisham with less than a minute left in the first half. Emmanuel Sanders made two nice grabs away from his body leading up to the Suisham FG.
The Redskins retaliated with 3 seconds left in the half. Kai Forbath made a 38 yard field goal to make the score: Redskins 17-6. Rex Grossman made a lot of nice throws to set up the field goal.
Landry Jones tossed a 10 yard touchdown pass to WR Derek Moye on a 4th and 1 at the start of the 4th quarter. The Steelers cut the Redskins lead to 4. On the same drive, Jones connected with Markus Wheaton on a go route for 45 yards.
On the next Redskins drive, Shamarko Thomas lit up Redskins’ running back and forced a fumble; Terry Hawthorne recovered the ball. The Steelers could not come up with points on their next drive.
Roy Helu Jr. scored a touchdown on a 30 yard run. The Redskins made the score 24-13 with 3:21 left in the game. The Redskins ultimately won 24-13
LaMarr Woodley put together a nice game. He put pressure on the QB a couple of times and even came away with a sack.
Ben Roethlisberger looked sharp, besides an ugly interception. Ben finished the night 5-6 for 66 yards.
Emmanuel Sanders made two nice grabs and totaled 39 yards receiving. Antonio Brown caught 3 passes for 34 yards.
Unfortunately we didn’t get to see much of Le’Veon Bell; he left the game due to injury. Bell finished with 9 yards on 4 carries.
Redskins QB Kirk Cousins also left the game du to injury. Cousins finished the game with 19 yards on 2 passes.
Rex Grosman had a good game despite throwing a pick. Grossman went 10-16 for 133 yards and threw a TD.
