In cutting veteran defensive ends Charles Grant and Marques Douglas, both signed on the eve of training camp, the Dolphins didn’t just chase off players with a combined 18 years of NFL experience on a single Sunday afternoon.
They also showed uncommon faith in rookie DE Jared Odrick, the first-round pick out of Penn State who has held down the starting right end role since Phillip Merling suffered a season-ending Achilles’ injury in late July.
It may not have been a coincidence that Odrick had his best game of the preseason last Thursday at Dallas.
He went through his first three preseason games failing to make a single tackle, although he did have a fumble recovery and a quarterback hit in his pro debut against Tampa Bay.
But Odrick was seemingly everywhere against the Cowboys, acro-batting down a Stephen McGee pass at the line and on the very next play chasing down Tashard Choice 34 yards downfield after Choice had made Jason Allen, among others, miss tackles.
