Good news, San Francisco 49ers fans. It appears as though your team is close to locking up their franchise quarterback. That’s because reportedly, the 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo are nearing a long-term extension.

Long-term contract extension negotiations between Garoppolo and the 49ers have gained significant momentum, and a deal could get done in the near future, sources informed of the situation said.

Of course, there’s going to be questions. But the report doesn’t stop there. One thing we can promise, however, is that it’s going to be very lucrative.

The lucrative, multi-year contract would mark the completion of a whirlwind process that began when he was surprisingly traded from the Patriots to San Francisco before eventually embarking on a stunning five-game win streak. The Niners wanted him as their franchise quarterback and his play warranted the investment that’s coming.

A deal isn’t imminent. But it’s coming. The sides are close.

There is work to be done over the next several days, but sources said the optimism coming from the organization has been warranted.

Oh, and there’s just one more thing.

The deal is expected to pay Garoppolo in the upper echelon of NFL QBs.

Can you blame the Niners? Why shell out for somebody like Kirk Cousins when Garoppolo is staring you right in the face? Sure he’s only had seven career starters, but the Niners are 5-0 in his. A completion rate of 67.4 percent is promising, but he’s going to have to cut down on the interceptions. Five in six appearances is less than ideal. However, the Niners went from one of the worst-looking teams in the league to competent. Unfortunately for them, the Los Angeles Rams are on the rise and the Seattle Seahawks’ window hasn’t closed just yet.

But it makes sense to tie down Garoppolo. This is the best the 49ers have looked since Jim Harbaugh left. There’s reason to hope if you’re a 49ers fan.

Just don’t expect to go undefeated next season — even with Garoppolo.
