Last season was a difficult one for former Jaguars quarterback David Garrard as he battled through severe back pain and was unable to latch on with a new club as a result.

Those difficulties seem to be behind him now though, as Garrard indicated in an interview with Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union that he’s getting very close being at full strength and is ready to test the waters of free agency for the first time.

“This is going to be a fun time,” Garrard said. “I’ve never been a free agent before. It’s almost like you’re being recruited again.”

Garrard believes he’ll be ready to workout for interested teams as early as next month and isn’t opposed to signing with a new club to be their backup plan at quarterback, provided the locale and direction the team is taking are a fit.

“I’m going to make sure whatever team I go to has talent at the skill positions, so when my name is called I’ve got the best guys around me that are all proven,” Garrard said. “That city the fans, the team itself, the skill players, the coaches, the system, all those things I get to take in account and weigh my options.”

The Jaguars released Garrard just before the start of last season, electing to roll the dice with rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert, and after surgery repaired the damaged disc in his back, Garrard sat out the entirety of the 2011 campaign.

Garrard was a four year starter in Jacksonville, throwing for 16,003 yards and 89 touchdowns throughout his nine year career with the Jaguars.
